OUCH 5:00 A.M. openings! Which dumbass thought this one up especially since some stores don't any high traffic until the afternoon. It's going to be a ghost town for the first few hours for some Macy's who don't get alot of morning business. Personally I prefer my beauty sleep so no thank you to Black Friday!

Our mall gets the 5am traffic. Sears, Penneys all open early. We will get customers.

Not the mall I work at. It's a downtown location. I remember during these sales that the first three hours we catered to the homeless, junkies, hookers, and anyone that might have been from a mental institution before any real customers came in.

Well at least the hookers have money!

I hate to say it, but Bell does have a point.

Just read on the Sears board; they open at 4 am. I'm sure Macy's will follow suit if they can make money.

There is no reason for any of these stores to open that early!

Yes there is; it's called GREED. It's called "lets inconvenience the workers as much as we can." It's called, workers with no sleep are grumpy at 4am.

electronic places LIKE best buy of course will be crazy early on with their specials....ya know ... like an HD big screen flat tv for $300. ok, i could see that.
but to get $50 off on a cashmere sweater that will be marked down anyway before xmas ?? and socks... i mean, come on now.

what really really KILLS ME about all these early hours is.......no one opens their mouth to question the super early hours !!! if most of the employees protested and refused to work that early, the store would be screwed. they could not fire 85% of each store...they would screw themselves. so if anyone wants to organize a "sit out" hmmmmmm.... I"M IN !!! Thumbs Up

after all this with the schedule, when the new one came out for the week AFTER thansgiving,, i'm scheduled again at 7:30 am on friday.!!! geez louise....how many fucking times do i have to tell my gsm this ??? i JUST had a discussion w/ her on how i could NOT make it in before 9:30 - even that is pushing it. she did help me out and change it for me.
i'm getting really sick of having to do this every friggin week. there are literally 12 - 15 people scheduled now JUST IN MY ZONE...that is not the whole department. so there are PLENTY of newbies and oncalls to give the crap hours to. sigh.

can't you trade with someone? I hate the early hours too, but there's always someone in my dept. that wants to get off early.
the register/POS allows for trades. In fact you can do it from home.

You are right, there is NO justifiable reson to have stores like Macy's open that early.

I noticed that this year even the downtown stores are opening at 5:00 am. Who in the heck is going to be lined up before 5:00 AM in downtowns like St. Louis and Houston ??

One exception to Macy's, and other stores insane hours, are locations in Paramus, NJ. Known as the Mall Capitol, Paramus, NJ has strict Blue Laws that bar Sunday openings, yes, it still exists, and it goes further. Retail stores in Paramus can not open before 7:00 am, and can not be open past 11:00 PM.

Despite this, the 2 Macy's in Paramus, Garden State Plaza and Paramus Park, are amoung it's most profitable.

Another rare example of sanity is the mid-west department store chain, Von Maur. Von Maur has regular hours on Black Friday, and on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, they close all stores at 4:00 PM for the start of the Holiday
(they do the same on Christmas Eve).

Ken

Happy Thanksgiving All !

I'm in a downtown store. The thing is that our public transportation system doesn't run that early in the morning so our store is enticing volunteers to start early by offering to pay for cab rides or parking.

Our store is a few blocks away from the Chinatown section of the city. So you can bet they'll be there with coupons in hand.

So...how was everyone's Black Friday experience? In my store, it was nothing like Black Fridays past. TONS of people working, and not very busy. Alot of people hanging around. After the specials were over, it was very slow.

And who was the genius that decided to put "ALL DAY" on the $10.00 coupon? I had so many customers arguing that I should give it back to them b/c it said all day on the front. UGH!

Our black friday was quite uneventful except for that stupid 10.00 pass that everyone wanted back. A few of the newbies didn't bother to read it so they gave it back to the customer, when it came time for me to take it, they bitched about it. "the clerk upstairs said I could keep re-using it all day". I said, this clerk downstairs has to take it cause it's a $$ cpn and good on one purchase. I got reported to a mgr for not giving it back to one customer, so what does the mgr do? I'll give you 3 guesses, the first 2 don't count, yes, I had to give it back to the customer. Ya, right, you count! NOT!!! Mad

WHAT??? I had so many people fuss at me and say that they were suppossed to get it back that I called a manager and asked her, and she said ABSOLUTELY do NOT give it back! The person that thought it was a good idea to put "ALL DAY!" on the $10.00 coupon should be fired. Of course it meant that you use it any time of the day, not use it over and over all day.

Since I didn't work yesterday, I got all the coupon complaints today. Try and explain why you can't use it on morning specials, but it was OK to use it after 2pm on the same items. The customers just gave me a blank stare, like I was from another planet.

And this morning, I witnessed an ASS giving customer wrong information about a bank check she had written yesterday. As he was explaining the policy (according to him, a customer can't get cash back until the check clears the bank. NO they can get the cash back if they have the receipt.) I stood in back of him and shook my head (NO). But I didn't say anything, I just let him make a total ass of himself. Finally, he called a Service Manager who's been there for a gazillion years. She backed ME up.
