We got ours today and boy are they big, I think we are going to carry more than just milk in the coolers.
Thank god we don't have to stock them because we already have enough to stock. Cool

DG, curious ... who is Dollar General's main competitor? Two or three are okay too. I just want to get a fair idea of your niche, since you're not in our market yet.

Thanks. Smile

Family Dollar is probably the closest competitor, followed by Big Lots, Dollar Tree and other deep-discount stores.
DG is in 27 states so far, mainly in the South, East, Midwest, and North. As far east as Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska -- and all states to the west of those.

Price points are heavy in the 4/$1 to $5 range for everyday core items, and $6 to $20 for special buy (seasonal, etc) items.

Think of it as a Mom & Pop version of Wal-Mart -- everyday household items, cleaning products, dry groceries (though they're now introducing coolers for dairy & eggs), clothing, health and beauty, toys, hardware, etc.
Just on a much smaller scale, and deeper discounts.

They are aimed at low-to-moderate income families. The premise is good, but unfortunately anyone who works for them becomes or remains a low-income earner. I think it may be their employees who keep them in business! Wink

You're welcome Smile
But, ooops!!! I need to correct myself -- DG is in the states to the EAST of the states mentioned, not to the west.
Hadn't had enough coffee yet!! Embarassed

I disagree with this quote of yours, I am neither a low income earner with DG nor will I become one! I am very happy with the way things are, so please don't speak for EVERYONE!

LoveMyDGstore.......I to am very comfortable with my salary. I am firm believer that you get paid what your worth if you have proven that worth. The survivors will be those who follow the programs, not try to change a way a corporation is operated because policies have to be enforce, and rules have to be followed. There are those of us who can do it and those who instead of doing it, stand back, think they know a better way and cause havoc and tension. Instead of just doing what they are asked to. Then those who are unhappy or who just can't handle it call us the ass kissers.........go figure??? For those of you out there who are so unhappy with your positions with DG, an attitude adjustment might help. Only you can change the way you feel about your job. Biggest issue, PayRoll!!!! Face it guys and read the mission statement.......I Quote
"PROMOTING LEADERSHIP THAT RESULTS IN TEAM CREATIVITY, PROMPT EFFECTIVE DECISION-MAKING AND TOUGH EXPENSE MANAGEMENT"
Tough expense management---(PAYROLL)---The largest expense in the company.....always has been.... always will be!!!! When a company runs a 20% margin, where do you think they are going to concentrate their efforts in producing profits while increasing sales.....PAYROLL!!!!!!! Cause they are building and building fast. DG stategy is great, they go into places no one else would dream of and capitilized on the sales available because they know what they are doing. They don't build big fancy buildings....and try to be something their not.....but they do have the customer in mind, by providing them with the basic everyday needed items with better prices than anyone else. Excuse me but do you think Walmart, Target, K-Marts and other large retailers care about the lower income clientel out there.......No way......cause they won't build anywhere unless the demographics are in the 100's of thousands. So with all that said.......you can make money at Dollar General.....but it all begins with that attitude you have. Now I am sure I will get messages left and right telling me what an ass kisser I am or how brain washed I may be but everyone is entitled to their opinion. DGSucks, I owe you an apology.......came on alittle strong earlier......and from reading messages I can see that you are making a difference in your unit. I am located in the south.....Hell, do I have bad days.....you dam right I do.....does the payroll piss me off? Sure it does. Do these warehouse trucks kill me everyweek? Yep!!!! But I Love every minute of it cause I am retail through and through........and Dollar General is more retail than any of them out there.
Make it a great day everyone!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets see.......I never said things were perfect, I did however state there were problems....and we are not the same person....apparently you magpie have a problem with someone being happy with their job and DG, instead, like you were a quitter and now like to tell ppl on here how to do this and that and you are not even part of it anymore....so why dont you just not reply to any of my post, nor any one elses that doesnt take your attitude about DG?

Wow. One little comment on low pay and there's an avalanche of pro-DG rhetoric! Razz I must point out that the pro-DGers had already started their propoganda campaign on the YAWM site and got resoundly booed. Then they found their way over here. It is my humble opinion that we have a couple of corporate trolls who have been following the old RW site and the YAWM site for awhile (there was mention made of having followed both). It is my belief that these sites became known to DG, and that the growth of the DG forums and the sharing of information and expressions of truth about the company were making the execs uncomfortable. They probably uncorked the champagne and threw a party when the old RW site went down.

It is my belief (not a fact, just my belief) that the sudden appearance of these posters gushing their love of the company and spewing the company line on this site and YAWM is actually an effort from behind the scenes at Goodlettsville
(DG's Headquarters). The haughty remarks that amount to "those who can, do -- and those who question things are incompetent havoc-raisers in need of an attitude adjustment" are designed to scare off any newcomers to this forum.
They want to color the forum so it appears to be unfriendly to those justifiably disgruntled workers seeking rapport with one another.

To get down to brass tacks, they want to kill this forum in its infancy, before it grows and becomes a useful tool to the employees the way the old RW did.

The only way to kill a troll is to starve it to death.

I know I will break my own resolution and give them something to feed on for a bit, as I do want to refute some of the more riduculous statements -- lest anyone mistake them for the truth by virtue of going unchallenged.

However, I do urge us all to ignore them for the most part, and treat them with humorous disregard when a response is too tempting to withhold.

In the event that I am wrong, and that these trolls (er, posters) are actually bona-fide store level employees whose intent is to merely spread the message of DG's sweetness and light as a company, my apologies to everyone.

Read their posts here and at YAWM, and see what you think.

Respectfully, Magpie

I agree with toothpicktwo, I would hope that this is a place for all veiw points concerning DG. I was once a strong supporter of the company, but have moved on to greener pastures several months ago. I still have many freinds who work for DG and feel that the majority of people who work at the stores are the backbone of the company.

I mainly left because I did not agree with the direction the leadership in my division was taking us. Plus they changed the bonus and I lost a huge amount of money! Surprised Shocked

Hi, POG MASTER!

Agreed, the people who work in the stores are the backbone of the company. And this is a place for all viewpoints, just not insulting behavior, that's all.

I once loved my job at DG, and was a strong supporter, too. The changes the company was making, and their effect on the store level employees drained my enthusiasm after a while. By the time I left, it had become a very different company than the one I had hired into.

I'm sorry to hear you lost $$ on your bonus. What position did you have? What is it that you do now?
I'm just getting ready to rejoin the workforce, I'm going to try to avoid retail this time. 20+ years was enough, I'm ready for a change. Wish me greener pastures, too! Smile

hey Magpie,

I once was a store manager and then a dm or am or whatever they call it now. I still go into DG stores to see how things are going and if everything is 100% recovered (lol). Get the truck up and recover the store 100%, oh yeah and cut your payroll back 10 hours this week also. Sound familar Doh! Man did I hate being forced to do that, but there was only so many beatings you can take from your superiors. Naughty!

I am a DM with another company and much happier with alot less stress. Thumbs Up

POG MASTER,

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Rock on!

You are the first person in the history of Retail-worker (old or new site) or on youareworthmore.org to identify yourself as a DM or AM, past or present.

You bet, that sounds familiar!!! Razz I'm just glad that you acknowledge how difficult it is for the stores to carry out -- that's music to our ears!! That's what we've been carping about the most, that it's impossible to achieve 100% productivity and efficiency without an adequate number of hands on deck. It's great to hear someone say that it's not just our imaginations!!!

The fact that you hated to do it shows that DMs (AMs??) are human too, despite the reputation they suffer as a whole.
Field-level executives are just as beaten-up as us store-level folks, and get most of the blame from us for being the messenger. Embarassed
We all have to feed our families, and that means doing what the boss says, whether one's boss is a store manager, a DM, an RM, or the CEO. It bothered me a lot to demand so much of my crew for so little in return, but while I was there I had to.
I was the messenger there, but fortunately the others didn't blame me, and gave their darndest to get everything accomplished. Teamwork at its finest! Thumbs Up

Congratulations on finding a similar position with better working conditions! There IS life after DG ... Very Happy
I hope you stick around here, and maybe give us some advice on problems that arise. An upper-level perspective from someone who does see both sides is always a good thing!! Wink

I have been with Dollar General for about a year. I have held the position of Assistant Mgr. since my date of hire. I have seen the store I work at go through an all new crew several times and a manager once. The only reason I have stayed with the company for so long is my Store Manager. This web site has helped us get alot of perspective on things we have been told by our DM that "is only a problem at your store"...
Wrong..
It looks like the problems with severe overstock, low pay, hours, payroll, and staff are a company wide issue.
I guess Im going to end this post for now, but I will be back to add more at a later date..

Oh yeah, and about the coolers freezers..
We seem to have a problem with our vendors putting soon to expire products in and then failing to remove them next visit. We have started to pull spent product and just hand the vendor a bag when they arrive..

Anyone else with the vendor issue??
