This is just one of the first relating to the Oil for Food Program........next one breaking is the internal audit about the total corruption of the UN and its upper management (links comming soon)

My point in this is that those who think that the UN is the right agency to run Iraq (or anything for that matter) are mistaken in my opinion.

I don't sing the UN song but I'd like to put my two cents worth into the thing anyway. This is one of the things you and I agree on although perhaps for different reasons.

It's no secret that if the US were to withdraw from the UN, the entire organization would collapse from lack of funding. That the US has continued to prop up the UN financially since it's inception in spite of actions inimicable to it's own interests is one thing. I really don't even argue with that part of it. I support my government through my taxes and it is constantly taking actions against my interests, so I understand that part.

But to continue to prop it up in the face of unbridled waste and corruption is not something the American taxpayer should be required to do, and with bloat comes inefficiency, waste and corruption.

The UN has become just another, bloated top heavy bureaucracy wherein none of the hundreds of hands involved know what they other hands are doing half the time. This isn't unique to the UN. It's a way of life for most governments.

The "dues" structure is slightly (sarcasm there) out of kilter. All member nations have one vote. It follows then that all member nations should be assessed the same dues. If those dues aren't enough to operate the organization at its current budget levels, then they should have to decide wha's vital and what's not and cut back accordingly, just as I have had to do in my own situation.

The UN might then, through lack of funding if nothing else, get back to being what it was designed to be, an organization to coordinate response to international emergencies, rather than a an active player in international politics and attemtping to be the arbiter of morals as well as politics within the borders of sovereign nations.

Anyone notice that Kerry has backed off on his call for the U.N. to take over in Iraq?

Nofs, great points on the U.N. I think as we learn more about the corruption and mismanagement that has occured there we will all be disgusted.
