I'm curious to know what the general consensus surrounding monogamy is around here.
I've been kind of torn on the concept lately. I'm subject to the ideology but the ideology doesn't jive with my experience, my observation or my (limited) knowledge of biology.
It's weird.
What do ya think?

I have to go with a little of both. If the wild kingdom - what's left of it - is any indication, there are species which mate for life and species which don't.
Humans are famous for taking things to new levels. In their quest for the most sought after ideal - civilization - they've pretty much bent everything else out of recognizable shape IMO

It's a touchy subject it seems. I wasn't even sure how to broach the topic.

I guess it depends on what stage in life you're in, which made me vote " a little bit of both " . People in marriages with families to consider, like the romantic ideal of monogmy. It's comforting. But, relationships go through changes as people do. If the changes in a marriage are especially damaging, a person might find justification in finding another partner that would suit their new perspective.
Um, I can't remember what the singles prespective looks like. Anyone?
I also think that finances have a bit to do with things. If a man is the main wage earner in the family, the woman would be less likely to look for another partner,( in it's most basic sense ) biology dictates that she care for her young. If a woman is the wage earner, that flips biology on it's head. The man might feel less " manly " having been put into the caretaker role, and might seek a way to feel more masculine in the form of an affair.
This is a touchy subject. I just re-read what I wrote and realized how many variables there are in today's culture, throw in the homosexual side of things, and you've got the makings of an interesting social sciences class.

Monogamy is definitely a fabrication of the human species, most probably with a biblical influence. In fact, biology pushes us towards polygamy.
| Quote: |
| Three recent studies on sex reveal that polygamy holds biological benefits and dominated human history so much that it is imprinted in our genes (source) |
I can't find it now, but there was an article a couple of years ago which explored, through the entire human evolution history, the equal tendency of both genders to "cheat", i.e. seek out multiple mates. Males did so to ensure the survival of their particular gene pool, while women sought out multiple partners for multiple functions - the stronger males (alpha) for the better genes, while the more resourceful males (beta) for the material support.
It is also interesting to note that, in the animal world, humans seem to be some of the biggest sluts.
So yes, I vote "ideological".
Good day
