I don't want this to turn into a mine is bigger than yours or my government is more generous than yours thread. I just thought that the global effort after this Christmas tragedy deserves at least a mention on this board.

160,000 dead. Death toll still rising. Tens of thousands of children orphaned. Over a million people displaced, homeless.

Donation spots worldwide

It took me a few days to get over the shock brought on by the gravity and magnitude of this catastrophe. This post is nothing more than a tribute to the victims and a salute to the rest of the world for coming together the way they did.

Strictly out of respect, can everyone who reads this first post please take a minute out of their busy life, log in and post (at least) a simple "." (dot), to signify respect, or "R.I.P.

Thanks in advance.

A foot note, There are MANY people that have not yet found a home in Florida or have rebuilt, Have we turned our backs on our own? Do other countries pitch in and send that kind of support to US?

OH NO! READ THIS :
About TSunami:
A Warnings about the new oceanic landscape go out right away. But the agency waits to update its charts until it gets final confirmation.

Among other international operations, the Navy is sending two ships to begin efforts to rechart the waters. One, the USNS John McDonnell, could arrive by next week.

It is expected to be followed by the newer USNS Mary Sears, which is awaiting final orders to head out from Japan. On board will be sonar, a dozen scientists and 34-foot vessels used to rechart the shipping channels.

The initial goal is not to study every square foot, but to understand what happened to the channels so the ports can be used to deliver relief supplies. Now, helicopters and airplanes are the primary means, said Capt. Jeffrey Best, commanding officer at the Naval Oceanographic Office at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi.

The Navy does not know what it will find. "We may have buildings or buses in the channels of the harbors,'' Best said.

Terminator Surprised Surprised Surprised are you serious...you do know the meaning of the term "third world country", correct??? Are you really so stupid that you'd compare a hurricane in Florida to a tidal wave that has killed ...what 130,000+ in countries as poverty stricken as India, the Adaman and Nicobar Islands, Somalia. In Florida the residents have insurance, banks, government aide, resources up the wazoo. In the above mentioned countries their resources i.e. tourism, got washed away.

IMAGINE, A SHIP NAMED SEARS? HOPE IT DOESN'T SINK.

Your humor is tactless and beyond disgusting.

Sticky, no one is down playing the extent of the tragedy in the Indian Ocean. It is truly horrific. May God bless the departed and survivors alike. What you may not know is that there are areas of Florida and Alabama that have not had their infastructure re-established after four months. Many people are still living in shelters. Insurance adjustors have yet to see/file every loss/claim. It takes a long time, years, to rebuild. And, yes, it's worse for those living in remote, out of the way areas of the world that cannot be reached by conventional means. But you can ask ANYONE who has survived a catastrophic event how tough it is to cope, adapt and perservear. And, yes, I and my family know. We lived thru Hurricane Andrew in '92 and a house fire last year. The survivors of the Tsunami AND the '04 Hurricane will both need or prayers and support for years to come. #30 Vernos

How many people in Florida and Alabama, since the hurricane, have died of dysentery, malnutrition, or gangrene??? What was the death toll as a result of the hurricane? What would you prefer: 1. Homelessness for three months in America (where most homeless people are obese). OR 2. Two weeks of utter depravation, watching your children die in squalor, of diseases EASILY treated and prevented here in the good ole USA, while your dead friends and relatives are tossed into large mass graves...if you're lucky.

If you don't want to pray for these people, try maybe the forgotten thousands in Sudan... Sad
