Walmart has pulled more than it's share of crap over the years but now, compared to other retailers are they really that much worse when it comes to employees or buying practices. We've heard about the overtime lawsuits but today are they still practicing working off the clock:do other companies do the samething Walmart was accused of:are they that much better?.When it comes to buying merchandise for sale let's face it any major retailer sells stuff made in China so aren't those corporations/retailers guilty of the samething-pressuring suppliers for a lower price?.If you were pretty sure Walmart didn't practice things like working off the clock would work for them as an employee,I've heard directly of better treament at Walmart than at places like Sears.

I believe retail is not the best choice for people who have dreams of glory as it tends to chew you up and spit you out if you don't like to live with your nose up someones ass

The exploitation exists throughout all of retail regardless of the store. Wally just happens to be the only one big enough to show up on the radar. I personally believe that there are much worse things happening within the smaller volume companies like Rite-Aid, CVS...etc. Companies like Home Depot manage to stay off the radar somehow but I talk to the employees there frequently and I can tell you that the same (if not worse) business practices live and breathe undisturbed within it's walls. I think it's just a matter of time before companies like Target who seem to have some kind of mind control over their employees be exposed for what they really are.

Retail tends to have onething in common-turn-over.As much as employee turn-over can hurt business I feel management is under the false impression that it will help them in the long run.
That being said high-turn jobs tend attract alot of 'temporary' mindset workers ie students, second job/income,benefits provider-in other words with out their ENTIRE life as far as $ and benies invested in the company/retail most will simply choose to quit or put up with the crap in retail-retailers hoping most will put up with it.
But changes are rarely made because most quit or tolerate it because to them a fight is simply not worth it.And for an 8$ an hour job how much fight do most have in them.Retail management sees this and tries to EXPLOIT it.Home Depot is a perfect example-Nardelli ran off I think 70% full-time workforce who liked their job and sank Home Depot to the number 2 spot behind Lowes.New HD CEO Frank Blake admits this-probably too late but has openly stated he wants to improve customer service with fulltime staff.
Strange how plenty an exec/manager can make a career out of retail and yet the hourly/commission worker in the field at store level seems to have the most trouble doing the same.and yet basically runs the business on a daily basis.BUT YET I've had management basically tell me on the side-this IS NOT a good full time job,it's good for students etc-that same manager is around the 20 year mark at Sears.

20 years ago an entry level employee was hired with the intention of progressing through the system and eventually becoming a decision maker at some level. Today the entry level employee is hired with the intention of being replaced within a specific time period. Today also a majority of the retail establishments have helped depreciate the value of a college degree by going after college graduates to fill entry level management spots instead of grooming existing employees to move up. Maybe they can justify a reduction of cost in hiring a college graduate to run stores over grooming a long-term employee, as far as turn-over rate though I would guess that the college graduate turn-over rate is just as high or maybe higher than the entry level turn-over rate.

no but, when Walton started the mart, as I remember as a kid, the slogan was to get the lowest prices for AMERICAN goods, if possible. now they are just sellouts to China. There are still many goods made in the US of A, look at Kaid products, made in NJ. I look at the label every time and try to only buy American products, USA< USA< USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Worked for bby for 9 1/2 yrs and received two payments for "working off the clock" due to them not letting people out of the door or in the door on a timely basis.
look at the lables, check where it is made. USA is the way!!!
