Hello all! I've just been hired by Big Orange as a flooring associate. I believe I got in because I know the HR pro, not because I have any recent retail or home improvement experience. I have read some of the posts in this forum, and the gripes sound pretty standard (and the acronyms are still alien).
I'm pretty excited about the opportunity, and would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer on how I can do well here. Please stay positive, although if what you have to say ~is~ negative, I'll listen as long as the criticism is well thought out. (It should be better than "Don't do it, for the love of God!!") Advice specific to the flooring department would be most appreciated. Is there anything I can do to better prepare myself before I start? Or will any important knowledge only be gained with actual store experience?

Product knowledge. Read everything, especially vendor supplied manuals, books, and guides. Read the packages, there's a lot of good technical information on most of them.
Generally speaking, there's at least one person in the department that REALLY knows their shit. You know, probably some ex-retiree with bad knees that has years of actual installation experience. Follow s/him around until you're comfortable tackling customer issues on your own.
You'll probably find that most customers have the same questions but different circumstances. Your job will be selling them the right stuff for their particular circumstances.
It's a pretty easy gig once you understand the installation materials and their particular purposes.
