I am leaving Lowes after 5 1/2 years. Its amazing how a you can work for a company for as long as I have and when a life changing event happens to you they wont work with your schedule. Recently my wife and I was blessed with a new baby son. Prior to his birth I put in a time off request for days off for baby classes I paid for.. YES I PAID FOR THE CLASSES. There were a series of 4 classes. The first of the group I was not able to make because of appointments. The big class of the 4 was on a Saturday from 9am until 4pm. I informed my store manager and put in a time off request over 2 weeks in advance. The day before the class I checked the schedule. To my amazement (IM BS'ing you guys, I wasnt surprised) They had me on the schedule. I went to the store manager and I told him that I was wondering about Saturday that I had requested off. He said "I Don't feel it is necessary for you to attend this class. How many classes do you need to go to anyways?" This pissed me off beyond belief more than he can imagine. Of all people I thought he would be considerate since he has 4 children of his own. I guess working all the hours they put in each week has made him forget how it is like to have a family. I am so disgusted with the whole thing.
While I am off work they only approved 3 days for my time off request. How can this be? FMLA for my state by FEDERAL LAW states you can have 7 days off work for FMLA.
Prior to my decision to leave lowes I have applied for numerous management positions. Each time I was written up for something done prior to that by as much as 6 months before. I have been a sales specialist in several departments for this company and sold a whopping 980,000 last year in sales and 930,000 the year prior. You would thing they would be alittle more considerate of their people.
I find the company to be very upsetting to work for after all that has happened to me.
Anyone else had a bad experience working for Lowes? If so post it here.

It's really sad that the companies we work for are turning against families. At a meeting last week at my store we were told that when we walk through the door to clock in we should forget our home life until we punch out, really sad the way these people think. If you'll post this on the other site (Retailworker .com) no slash in between retail and worker, you'll get alot of response.

It doesnt amaze me how pathetic this company was to work for. Before my last day I did more than $55,000 in a 4 day total of sales. You know what that got me? NOT ONE DAMN THING. Not even a good job. Do these people not seem to care. The moral at the store I worked at was horrible. Our sales manager would send emails to everyone in the store in ALL CAPS LIKE THIS and basically threaten us day after day. I wish I saved copies of the damn emails so I could send them to corporate office.
Lowes is so damn customer oriented they forgot where their sales come from. Not the customers....but the employees. TAKE CARE OF YOUR DAMN EMPLOYEES FOR ONCE. Lowes doesnt seem to care about employees. Hell Wal-mart is more concerned with their employees than Lowes.
I dont know how upper management can honestly sleep at night knowing how they treat us unless they are immune to the whole thing. Must be what the teach in those classes. How to bitch slap your employees and feel good about it. I bet the class doesnt have a title but im sure its there somewhere. I wouldnt know though since Ive only tried for 4 times to get into management and been written up by the same person every time. Our sales manager must be frightened for her job if I got into the program. Cause I would have definately told him/her off on how they were treating the employees at the store.
NO EXCUSE FOR IT.
TO LOWES CORPORATE!!!!! HOW CAN YOU GUYS SIT BACK AND LET YOUR MANAGERS TREAT YOUR EMPLOYEES LIKE CRAP. HOW CAN YOU SIT BACK AND BE SO BLINDED BY EVERYTHING. DOES STILLMUFF AND NIBBLEBLOCK NOT READ ANY OF THE FORUMS TO SEE HOW THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE TREATED. IF THEY DO PLEASE REPLY OR EMAIL ME BECAUSE DAMMIT I WANT YOU GUYS TO KNOW HOW YOUR FORTUNE 50 COMPANY IS SUCH A MISFORTUNE TO WORK FOR.
FURIOUSLY UP YOURS,
LEAVINGLOWES

I dont blame you for taking off. I work at 1030 in so cal. 11 months ago we had our 2dn child. I had been bragging about it for 9 months so the whole store knew as well as the str mgr and all the zones. when I got the call on 12/15 last year, I had allready put in my 3 wks of leave req. It states at the bottom of the req, that it will be returned to you w/i 6 days it never way. Well, I cam in on my 2nd wk to get my ck and purchase a few items. When I looked at my ck, I had 20 hrs (im a pt associate), I paniced, I work at FedEx during the day but, I use Lowes for diapers/baby sitting and such so the money was needed. I went to the str mgr and laid in to him. He basically said he didnt care, that Lowes policy is only 5 days off in a row for vacation. I explained to him that this isnt vacation, my girlfriend just had a friggin baby, Im not in Vegas. Im at home caring for a family member. He didnt care. I had to go to corp. HR to get the money owed to me. They didnt even offer me FMLA, which you can take for up to 90days not the previously mentioned 7. But, you dont get paid for it, but using Fmla you can take your time to be w/ family and they cant hold it against you. OH yeah, when I was out on leave I got a raise, .26 cents, I asked the stor mgr at the same time where he got the figure of .26 since I have not gotten a review or anything in a year. He said "I dont know, the computer just adds them in." WTF? Lowes sucks, but its exactly .33 miles from my carreer job and Its convient. Ill be complaining about it for another year or 2, but Ill never reccomend Lowes to friends or family for a JOB.

Why would someone wait until the DAY BEFORE a requested day off, before they checked the schedule? The schedule had been posted for two weeks, I would imagine that if he had gone to his zone mgr the day it was posted, they would have been more likely to work with him

i was about to reply with a pretty similar comment. i won't say it's all stores because obviously i don't know, but when someone asks about working at lowe's, my response is always along the lines of, "lowe's has wonderful customer service. they make up for that in the way they treat their employees.

really merlin? REALLY? 1st off, i think it was a little rude of you to assume the schedule was there for two weeks. the day in question here is a saturday, the 'beginning' of our scheduled week. is it really so hard to believe the schedule was late being put up? benefit of the doubt, my dear.
2nd--how long the schedule was previously up doesn't even really matter; he shouldn't have had to check in the first place. he asked off for a VERY legitimate reason with plenty of time in advance to do a little schedule shuffling. he had no reason to think the time off wouldn't be approved.
and finally, i think you missed the point. lowe's doesn't care about their employees. one bit. they don't take into consideration the needs of employees, nor do they ever show any sort of compassion.
apparently it's in manager handbooks or something because recently in my store, our manager backed us 100% in something h.r. was doing that they had no business doing. not even a week later he turned his back on us and went out of his way to reinforce what h.r. was doing. to the point so that 3 long-term employees gave their 2 weeks notice then and there and he didn't bat an eye. (and for the record, these were valuable employees.)
they can spout off bull about having to run a company and all that shite all they want. there are companies out there far more successful than lowe's that know how to be compassionate and adaptable with employees while still being able to make the business run smoothly.
i started putting in applications last week.

You did the right thing lowes did the wrong thing, right now they are taking away some employees sat. and giv them sun. and mon. also no extra sun. off. giving them mon. instead, stating its coverage issues. no 30 day notice like our store requires from us. i have a corprate schedule. that is that.
they tried it once i said i have my 12 months plotted, every day off is scheduled for family time i'm a single mom and the kids are teenagers i won't have much time left with them and lowes is not taking that away from me. I really get mad , they solve problems by useing us like chess pieces instead of people. need coverage hire people. The problem with that is budget they get a bonus if they come in under peyroll budget. money in there pocket more money spent on there family. screw the employees . WOW sorry. it just enough they need to get a clue.

you're an idiot, Lowe's mgr's do not get a bonus for payroll, its out of their control. everything that mrg's do with hiring employees is based on budgets and nothing else. we just lost 3 dept. mgr positions due to this! are we happy? NO! if you want to look at payroll incentives just log onto your lowe's live and pull up the incentives page and you will see all of the potential out there.
maybe, if you people would quit bitchen about what is not done by someone you would realize the money that there is to be made by helping someone!

roger, stupid of you to put your name up, I'm not mgmnt just a tought. however, did you think you're expected to do that? I know if I had a commercial sales associate that I would. Maybeeeeeeee she was not even in your area but landed that sale because she helped a customer???????

In my store the request would have been denied because it wasn't submitted 30 days prior. The schedule is required to be posted 10 days in advance. If that isn't happening in a store there are some serious problems.

Ok, either way the poster did not follow the policy. They shouldn't have been surprised to be scheduled.
