WALNUT CREEK — Controversy simmered Monday night at a parent-teacher meeting that didn't involve test scores, dog-eared study books or even the Pledge of Allegiance. It was all about peanut butter and one student's serious allergic reaction to it.
Valle Verde Elementary School has put in motion a "peanut reduction policy" to accommodate the needs of Leora Cope's 5-year-old son. So serious is his allergy to peanut products that a mere smudge of peanut butter left on the monkey bars for him to touch could send him into anaphylactic shock or possibly trigger a deadly reaction.

I have to say, I'm very lucky not to be afflicted by a nut allergy. Should everyone suffer though, for the sake of a few? Should we seggregate peanut butter spread at donut shops, schools, supermarkets?
Let's try to have a meaningful debate, without bashing! Please.

K, do you really want to talk about nuts? Hey it could be dangerous...what if someone leaves their sack of nuts near somebody who is allergic??? Could it be that leaving ones nutsack could be considered criminal?

Allergies to peanut and other nut products in childhood are becoming more and more common. The allergic responses can range from very mild to very severe, even deadly, but the overall incidence of peanut allergies is increasing. Sometimes the allergy is "outgrown" eventually, if the affected person's body is not exposed to the allergen for a long enough time.
Many elementary school systems are addressing this situation by discouraging the presence of peanut products at school.
Searching backpacks does sound extreme, but the school would be expected to "search" for anything that could be construed as a "weapon" in any other context, if there were reason to think another child's safety may be endangered by something brought to school by another student.
In this extreme case, peanut butter is indeed a deadly substance for one of the students.
On the other hand, since this particular child is so very allergic that his life is at risk even through such minute exposure as a smear of PB on a monkey bar -- without even needing to ingest any?? -- I would feel safer as his parent by keeping him out of an environment where such exposure is even remotely possible. I would home-school as a safety measure for my kid, period.
I have a child who, among others in her class, had a peanut allergy. Hers was not severe at the time it was discovered, though it could have successively worsened through repeated exposure to peanut products over time.
Our school district already had a program in place for this. Along with allergy information being asked about on the family data sheets that the parents fill out each year, the kindergarten thru elementary teachers sent home info sheets asking the parents of each child in a given classroom to list any food allergies their child may have. In turn, all parents of children in a given room were asked not to send treats for birthdays, holiday parties etc that contained the substances other kids were allergic to, be it peanuts or Blue dye #3, that were intended to be shared by the students.
I found this to be reasonable, and refrained from sending items with any of the mentioned products in them.
Beyond that, I feel it's up to the parents to educate their own child about his or her medical condition, and to teach the child not to "swap" lunch or snack items with other kids until they are old enough to identify a food that may be suspect.
That's what I did, and eventually my daughter (thankfully) outgrew her peanut allergy. Now I can't keep enough peanut butter and other formerly "forbidden" food items on hand -- she's making up for lost time!
