Home Depot and others have been accussed of harrassing alleged shop lifters with threatening civil actions rather than criminal. But a wrongly accused CUSTOMER at Home Depot got a slapped with a suit for $3000 and AFTER prooving he bought a $8 set of drill bits-in front of judge.
From the consumerist http://consumerist.com/358679/home-depot-lord-taylor-walmart-hire-law-firms-to-harrass-bully-alleged-shoplifters
Hey,don't get me wrong, thieves should be caught and prosecuted but NOT harrassed outside the CRIMINAL justice system. If the retailer wants restitution for the stolen or damaged merchandise OK but if they want more it should be from somekind of pool administered too by a CRIMINAL COURT.If the CRIMINAL wants to slap on a surcharge to shoplifting citations and let the stores pull $$$ from that much like a victims compensation fund OK but to harrass people over petty theft with major lawsuits is ridiculous.
What bothers me even more is Home Depot is one of those retailers who has FIRED employees for pursuing shoplifters. At Sears I spotted fraudulent checks from very savy scammers, our store was hit by major theft rings and they don't sweat. And yet the guy who gets caught shoplifting the 50$ sneakers or 8$ drill BITS has to pay for the highly organized thieves/rings who skill level superceeds most in retail management?.

well, to be honest, the LPI division of home depot seems a bit lax. it seems more to be there to make back the money they lose from highly organized criminals (like the one who stole a good $10000 worth of wire from Lowes recently (if you work in GTA area, you'll know what i'm talking about) by prosecuting the idiots who try and take something small but aren't slick enough.
We found out about it only because somebody at lowes was nice enough to tell us.
