Hey, I got 4 job Interveiws next week for an internship. If they hire me the internship pays 17-20 per hour. If I get hired I am one more step of leaving macys. The internship starts in the summertime. So I properly will work 1 day a week at macys. I don't want to be on call because I will loose all my benefits. I will give most of my hours to somebody. Wish me luck. Very Happy Smile Cool Razz Wink Thumbs Up Rock on!

Macys has always been good to me, they gave me a lot Macys money while I was there. Plus so far since I been there 1 1/2 years I got 3 raise plus I am getting 1 more in May. I love the fact that I make more money than most people. But I can't just leave macys because iit is just a summer internship, if it was a regular job I will leave macys for good or become on call.

Money I believe that they had something to do with the Campeau Corporation/Federated & Allied Department Stores disaster. I believe they were either representing the original companies or the buyers.

The 1980's was such a mess for retail that all the big investment banks should be ashamed. They made millions on the disasters that were created. Thousands upon thousands of people lost their jobs because of what the investment companies did.

Those investment banks let Robert Campeau buy 2 of the world's largest retail conglomerates - Allied Department Stores and Federated Department Stores, with no equity! For Pete's Sake there is a huge difference between a Department Store chain and a Volkswagen! You can't sign and then shop!

Sorry, I will get off my soap box now. Smile Good Luck Money. It will be good for you.

I'm not as good as used to be. I used to enthralled by retail history! I have studied the Macy's LBO and bankruptcy till I was blue in the face. I have presented on it in college courses. Everything from Macy's by itself to retail in popular culture. My last presentation was before I received my associates degree and it was about retail and how it shaped life as we know it.

You would be surprised at some of the things that retail has done for us in our everyday life! For instance - Montgomery Wards, if it had not been for Monkey Ward we wouldn't have returns! I know how much we hate them in retail, but as a consumer is it not a novel idea?

I am very excited about this interview. It's in a great place and I am very excited. I am going to get to rent my cousins house which is about ten minutes away from the school.

I am excited because it is in another state and would be a fantastic opportunity for me! I can't wait till the interview and I am praying that I get the job!

Sounds great!
BTW, I never knew that about Montgomery Ward. There was no such thing as returns before then?
I love the way that retailers can look up your purchase on your credit card now, b/c I can't seem to keep up with receipts.

Montgomery Wards was a hair brained idea that started when Montgomery Ward worked for Marshall Fields. He didn't like the fact that the big department stores such as Macy's, Marshall Field, Rich's, Neiman Marcus, Dillard's, The Bon Marche, well you get the point... were all in the big city. The farmer who lived several days away (remember there was no such thing as a car in 1878 to the mass public) couldn't get the goods they wanted without making the journey. He came up with the idea of a catalog that could be mailed to customers. Customers selected what they wanted from the catalog and mailed the information and money back. Montgomery Ward sent the goods with the promise that "Satisfaction will be guaranteed or your money will be given back". This promise was brand new and no other retailer had ever offered such. Montgomery Ward pioneered the way for Sears and Roebuck.... (Whats with Chicago and mail order?)

Ironically the first Montgomery Ward store did not open till 1928. Almost 50 years after the company was founded. Because of Aaron Montgomery Ward though Chicago has a beautiful water front. The city of Chicago wanted to allow industry to go on the water front. Aaron Montgomery Ward didn't like that, and he sued the city to stop. Thats why there is a park on the Chicago water front!

Montgomery Ward and Company pioneered retail and the way that we shop.... The loss of the original Montgomery Ward company was monumental to the retail industry. By all right it should have been Sears to file for bankruptcy that fateful day.

Legally, a store does not have to take back anything it sells. It is a customer service to do so. There was a store called Howard's several years ago. It was a small dept. store in a Southern town. Mr. Howard directed all of his employees not to take back a thing. They didn't. He stayed in business for over 50 years, until he died, and the store folded. Sometimes it is a good thing to do returns, as long as it can be proven that it was bought at that store, and it is not old. I hated having to take back stuff that was years old because it was "good" customer service.

Oh my favorite was...

"We are going to approve this return to save the customer from shopping elsewhere"

I hated when it when you could obviously see that it looked like the merchandise had been dropped from the top of the Empire State Building!
