When we got sold down river by Lacey and usurped by Eddie.

Greed and apathy are killing us by a slow and painful death.

I lost my loyalty when the LRQ scheduling came in and flooded the floor with unqualified sales people. It was a kick in the nuts to the people who built the business.

For me it stopped when they took the commission away from Shoes. I made more money then. I worked hard, knew the dept. inside and out. But, when they also started setting up the dept. as the way it looks in Kmart. It was almost as if, what I did; didn't matter anymore. They quit getting after us about selling shoe care. I was tops in the dist. before they quit watching the sales for it. It just fell apart even more as I had seen how the customers mood changed as well.

Sears will never give up it's own life for anyone, they expect everyone to die for Sears and it's done a pretty good job. Sears is like a snake that wraps it's body around it's enemy and suffacates it. I'm watching everyone around me jumping ship and moving on with thier lives (and many are managers also), everyone is tired of this crap. Nothing anybody does is "acceptible" or good enough. When things are going bad, look out, the fireworks start. Then they come up with these "Romper Room" tactics to get us motivated and to get the numbers up. To increase credit a few weeks ago, they came up with an idea to give us our choice of a drink, a bag of chips or cookies for every app. I got 2 apps one day and they came out and asked me what I wanted, and I said "nothing, give it to someone else." I got critisized because thier gifts "weren't good enough for me". I tried to tell them that I don't need to be treated like I'm 10 years old to do my job. Some people laugh this crap up and can't wait to get these goodies. I think it's demeaning and a slap in the face. It's getting off topic here, sorry. It's just getting old getting scolded when things are bad, then they want to "bribe" us with goodies that my 13 year old son and 10 year daughter would push each other out of the way to get. I'm tired of the bashing and I'm tired of the little kid favors they dangle in front of us.

When did the desire to work there die?

When it began the pattern of revoking benefits of people who had already retired.
Thats when I started looking for other employment.
And I ended up much better off by leaving.

I watch Sears now knowing what pension money I left behind will probaby be gone before I can collect.

Yep, in 1999, when they terminated retiree health insurance.

And that was just the first shoe to drop!

And I remember alot of the retirees picketed in front of Sears stores Thanksgiving day over that. It's just totally wrong to see what's happening. I'm sure I won't get anything from Sears now, except from what I paid to have Social Security and even that may not come either.

It's kind of hard to pick an exact time. I started to realize this company was doomed back in the 80's, but I was sure my personal positive attitude and can do spirit would make it work for me, if not for the other slackers around me. Very Happy . It actually did work for me (sort of) for some years, but the bell tolls for everybody eventually.

Some critical memories of impending doom:

The first time they instituted a quota for MA's around 1981.
The first time I walked into a Home Depot.
When they started manipulating pay levels for the front lines and claiming it was for their benefit.
When they shut down the catalog business.
When they experimented with everyday low pricing for a few days and then went right back to the old way when it got tough.

you got it allhands-a slow agonizing decline with a few highs and lows in between.

But the thing that amazes me to this day is how the same mindset, attitude and bureacratic nature of Sears that still exists to this day. This makes for a very fertile breeding ground for fish lips on butt syndrome.

The final death blow: http://www.retail-worker.com/forum/about8792.html without a doubt and the mindset and foam that it created is still in the company today.

J C Higgins! Love the name...before Ted Williams. Bet many on here have never heard of it before. My brother still has a 12 guage pump with J C Higgins on it. What a blast from the past. And people wonder when Sears started going down hill. Lose your identity and lose your customers.

I agree the merger was the actual kill shot but it took decades of management Sears and Reobuck style to become prey for predators like mr ed.It also took some self centered careerists and judases like the wheelman Alan Lacy.

Old Yeller is also a good handle. I remember the Disney movie was the first time I cried in a theatre. I think you are correct, nobody remembers J.C.H as a brand, and most posters don't know who Ted Williams or Sir Edmund Hilary is either.

On the contrary... We had a bunch of JC Higgins stuff in my younger days including the High standard version of the High Standard Double Nine which was my anti-snake gun on many a fishing and hunting expedition.

But then again, I'm older than everyone else so I guess I'd be expected to remember... if I had any memory left at all.

cashiers get tacos, balloons and candy bars for getting credit apps. Grade school time...most of us are getting too old for that crap. What I'm really tired of is feeling like no matter what you do, it's wrong...managers picking at stupid stuff and letting more serious issues slide. Also being treated like you don't have a brain.

I'm with you. Up until the merger there was still a shred of hope someone with some vision, courage, and charisma, could take over and make the right moves to revive the long decaying company. As Voice has written about numerous times, they had a successful concept in the original Sears Grand. They could have taken the risk and built hundreds of these stores, maybe eventually jumping ship from the mall stores entirely.

The day Lampert took over was the end. I suppose for arguments sake we have to leave open the slim possibility Eddie will have some sort of life changing revelation and take a different direction. But here we are three plus years into the merger and the rhetoric coming out of Sears top management is no different than the first day. It appears they have no plans other than the usual cost cutting. These guys just don't get it.

Ironically Sears had what the competition is killing us with back in the day:til the 90s for the most part.Sears used sell stuff like kitchen cabinets, carpeting, fencing, chain, garage doors, storm doors etc.Even if they scaled back with limited selections just keeping their foot in the door... .Never been in a TGI but if Sears would carry so much as 1 type of sheet of plywood or 2X4s,or copper, plumbing etc.Eh,been down this road.

But all this is NOT even possible simply because they went away from propietary house brands and went into direct competition by selling DeWalt drills or Maytag washers.Funny thing is though most knew Whirlpool made Kenmore and Stanley made alot of Craftsman.By steering away from house brands Sears lost valuable floor space AND buying power.

I think it was searsdealer even recommended everyday low price but mr ed isn't happy with A profit,mr ed wants A BIG profit.

And let us not forget socks and stocks thanks to Philip A Purcell. For me HE:Philip A Purcell set Sears on course from which they would never really recover.l

Exactly! That, and taking away our retirement medical benefits. My age, and health problems, make it next to impossible to go elsewhere. Otherwise, I'd have been gone long ago!
