Hi everyone. I have an interview with Macy's on Monday and was just wondering if it's a good place to work. I'm a college student looking to make some extra money on nights and weekends. What's starting pay for an entry level part timer? I used to work at Sears, so I figure no job could be as bad as that...

I live in Texas, btw. I know in some companies it matters what division you're in.

Where in Texas? I know the manager at the Galleria store near Austin, and I used to work for a Federated store in Fort Worth. Overall, Macy's is not bad. It is good that you have some retail experience, but the downside to Macy's is that the managers tend to take advantage of you by having you work at things without them helping you. They also can't seem to make a decision and stick to it. Good luck with your interview.

The pay rate varies! I'd say you would be making approximately the same as Sears unless you work in Cosmetics and get a decent base pay plus a small commissionable percentage. Credit card accounts are a big thing with Macy's and it is neverending that you will be expected to open accounts continously since it factors into your reviews. I heard Sears is also big on credit card accounts so you should be use to it! Your employee discount is done on some sort of Macy's charge card whether prepaid or regular and will taken off your next statement so be sure to stay on top of it to make sure you are getting your discounts. Management is strained and a manager can be in charge of multiple departments so ACTUALLY having your department manager overseeing you might be diffcult. As far as seasonal employment it is okay but don't expect to stay with long with the company since upward mobility is really rare! Doh!

My advice...run while you still can! They will pay you the least that they can possibly get away with, then work your tail off by leaving you all alone covering 1-7 departments. Have a life? SORRY, but to work at Macy's, you must be FLEXIBLE, and that means that we work when customers shop! Although, I haven't seen too many people shopping at 11 pm, so I still can't figure that one out.
If you do decide to work at Macy's, try to get cosmetics, and don't take the first wage that they offer you. The CAN pay you more, and they will if they really want you. At least you will make some commission (until they decide to take it away). I would suggest trying to get into women's or men's fragrances, since the sales there are usually at least 60-70 dollars for a bottle of fragrance, versus 13 dollars for a tube of lipstick that the customer took 45 minutes of your time to pick.
Just my 2 cents!

I agree with maycylady ruuuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! If you have to work retail, try a smaller chain store or even an independent who might treat you well. I have worked both, department store and smaller chain and I prefer the small chain. Macy's has no respect for their employees.

Macy's can afford rubber gloves? I thought it was mandatory to work unsafe and unsanitary conditions by getting your hands dirty? Doh!

Macy's bought every store a brand new box of rubber gloves! After they cut your employee discount. However, since the inception of the black dress code and since employees have stopped buying things they have been forced to send the rubber gloves back to rubberglovesmart.com

is it a good place to work? hmmmmmmmm..... lemme see..... Rolling Eyes first of all, you have to wear black . lots of it. all the time. always. then you have to deal with the never ending harassment of opening credits. since you'll be new , you are on probation and MUST open the required amount or you're out !!! no matter how much they like you. yes, you have to clean out fitting rooms constantly since there is no "6 minimum per person" they take in 15 items at a time often. oh, and don't forget to open some credits while you;'re cleaning out those rooms and aren't really waiting on customers. and you do know you will be starting at minimum wage? at least in new york state you will be. but opening all those credits will give you macy money which you can use to..........................................buy more black stuff so you wait on pain in the ass customers so you can open macy's credits cards !!! ya getting the picture yet?

MAYcylady said it best - as everyone else did- RUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN !!!! run for the hills and don't look back !!!!!!!!! Thumbs Up

LOL EX!

Honestly, to tell you the truth, every store is different, though this board represents someone from almost every Macy's district. Some Macy's locations will be run different, but for most of the persons on this board, they have horrible management teams in their store and are often suffering the rath of these horrible managers. Somewhere out there in the New York State/New Jersey region we have learned of this "Fantasy Macy's" that everyone is dying to work at.

Macy's has an incompetent CEO, but you mentioned you had worked Sear's, so you will probably be used to it. Eddie and Terry are probably good friends, if not the same person Evil or Very Mad

Go into your interview with openness and willingness to try it, if you get the job and hate it, give your notice and get out. You never know till you try it.
