|
|

I know that some of the malls up my way have both a Macy's and Boscov's and Im wondering how this will play out. Im sure lots of Boscov's employees will be applying to Macy's.
-------------------------------------------------------------
READING, Pa. - August 4, 2008 (WPVI) -- The troubled Boscov's Department Store chain has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
The Reading, Pa.-based department store chain also says it will close 10 of its 49 stores. It otherwise will continue to operate without interruption during the reorganization.
Boscov's blames credit issues, acknowledging that some suppliers have stopped shipping merchandise to the company. It also cites sluggish consumer spending.
The company says, though, it has secured $250 million in financing from Bank of America, which will allow it to pay for shipments of merchandise for the back-to-school and holiday shopping seasons
The retailer - America's largest family-owned independent department store - has stores in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.
In a statement on July 29th, when asked about the store's financial situation, officials with Boscov's said "it is currently working with its lenders and advisors exploring a range of alternatives to improve our company's financial base".
Boscov's is the nation's largest family-owned, full-service department store chain with 49 locations.
The store's roots date back to 1911 when founder Solomon Boscov sold items in Berks and Lancaster counties using a horse and wagon. Eventually the first store was created at 9th and Pike Streets in Reading.
Boscov's first expanded outside of reading in 1972 by opening a store in Lebanon.
The other Boscov's stores that are closing are:
MARYLAND
Marley Station Mall, Glen Burnie
Owings Mills Mall, Owings Mills
White Marsh Mall, Baltimore
NEW JERSEY
Monmouth Mall, Eatontown
PENNSYLVANIA
Harrisburg East Mall, Harrisburg
Monroeville Mall, Monroeville
Montgomery Mall, North Wales
Oxford Valley Mall, Langhorne
South Hills Village Mall, Bethel Park
VIRGINIA
Piedmont Mall, Danville

They r dropping like flies!
Bankruptcies Declared:
Linens N Things
Steve & Barry's
Boscov's
Sharper Image
Mervyn's
Goody's
Shoe Pavilion
Bennigans and Steak & Ale (not retailers, but similar concept they r retailers of prepared food)
Friedman's
Other major retailers
Ann Taylor
Pier 1 Imports
Starbucks
Dillard's
The Home Depot
Zales
Have all announced major store closings. Pier 1 could close over 100 stores! Store closings are new at retailers such as Starbucks which typically only closed for relocation or The Home Depot who has never shuttered a single store before. (Store at Home Depot liquidate when the store is moving) Even Dillard's is announcing major store closings - having closed 3 Tennessee locations this year alone (which is unique to Dillard's, they usually don't close stores).
Macy's doesn't appear to the only "ill" retailer.

I thought Belk was the largest family-owned department store in the country.

As a matter of fact their list of store closings - 10 store's - I only found 9, 7 of them are former Macy's or Federated/May companies and most of them opened in 2006 as a result of the Macy's merger.
Bambergers/Macy's
Macy's
Bamberger's/Macy's
Abraham and Strauss/Stern's
Gimble's/Kaufmann's
Jc Penney
Gimble's/Kaufmann's
John Wanamaker/Hecht's/Strawbridges

I am going to go to IKEA soon if it kills me. Pier 1 is nice, I love their stuff but so do they. I like Linens N Things but the one here is too expensive. I usually go to Kohl's or Macy's when I need housewares.

I still can't get that IKEA commercial out of my head where the lady is screaming, "START THE CAR!", when she realizes she's saving a bundle!

Wait 'till she gets home and realizes that you have to put all of the stuff together, and the instructions do not come in English! My husband fusses every time I buy something there.

So why don't you go already? What's keeping you from going to IKEA? I'll probably go one day this week, b/c my girlfriend just got a new house and she needs some new stuff. She's got five thousand to spend on furniture, so this should be fun!
I'm just there for moral support, and of course, my awesome interior design abiltiy. But I am going to get a bookcase that I have been wanting for awhile.
BTW, I still haven't gotten my new catalog!
FOM, do you want me to pick up a catalog for you when I go?

I would love that! I actually emailed the IKEA in Atlanta and they are sending me one I hope. I may break down and go one Saturday, I want to go to Bloomingdale's also. School started, so thats why I haven't even been on here in nearly a week. I had to write a trillion lesson plans for next week.

High School Football dictates that schools start earlier than they used to. Seriously though - every school I know of started today or tomorrow or last week. My old high school has been back almost 2 weeks.
