As a friend from Guatemala told me, "Hispanic is not a race."

And your point? Or is this just another "clever" little dig that goes nowhere?

Simply a statement of fact, it can't be racism if race isn't involved. A difficult concept for many but that's the way it is.

IN other words, just another clever little dig. I thought so. OK, my apologies for not being PC enough.

First thing first. From Wiki

Racial discrimination typically points out taxonomic differences between different groups of people, even though anybody can be racialised, independently of their somatic differences. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the term racial discrimination and ethnic discrimination.

A difficult concept for many but that's the way it is. Wink

Out here in our little part of the country where people of Hispanic descent are the majority population wise and common usage derives greatly from that fact...

Where people of Hispanic descent, especially comedians and public figures etc., refer to Caucasians using the same racial epithets and other terms as do black comedians and public figures etc....

where most job applications and survey forms list Hispanic along with Black and Asian etc., with no indication that Hispanic is a catch-all label of ethnicity rather than race...

where many people of Hispanic descent claim to be the VICTIMS of racism and often are subjected to the same racist treatment as those who can actually pigeonhole themselves in one of the encyclopedia designations...

where opposition to illegal immigration is definitely CONSIDERED racism by many of Hispanic descent...

where you still see a lot of "la Raza" graffiti...

where there is no other common word that could be used in the point I was making that would indicate treatment on the basis of ethnicity (the definition of ethnicism came up "Heathenism; paganism; idolatry)...

where many politicians of Hispanic descent still pull the "race card" against their opponents (who in many cases are being racist and deserve it)...

it's damned hard for a poor old uneducated type like me to tell sometimes.

So... just in the interests of polite conversation... do you have any hobbies other than patrolling message boards doing drive by sniping at people you don't like?

Oh Boy, the UN says so! But what do they say? Hispanic isn't even a real ethnic description, it simply refers to people who come from a Spanish speaking culture but I believe Spaniards are excluded. Someone from the Philippines could claim to be Hispanic but they are a different ethnic group than Mexicans.

Just because a bunch of wacky people say something doesn't make it so. Kinda like the feminazi claim that if a woman has sex with you and regrets it after the fact, it's rape.

I never met you so how could I either like or dislike you.

You don't get it Snurrble. Nofs is 100% correct. People play the race card when it gets them something. Otherwise they are a victim. I got an email recently that said if I didn't vote for O'Bama means I'm a racist. Really? So me being white and not voting for a "African-American" means I'm a racist? But yet all the "African-American" voters can vote for O'Bama and yet not one of them is a racist for not voting for McCain? If any woman votes against O'Bama means they only voted that way for Palin? I am really sick and tired of people playing this game when it's convieniant for them or if they can benefit. I really hate it when stand up comedians poke fun at their own race and use racial slurs that they find offending that someone of another race says about them. Nofs has said this many times and no one seems to get it, racism is a double edged sword. It's ok when it's in your favor, otherwise bitch up a storm.

No, they play the "race" card because they want special treatment as a victim.

I got one of those too. Didn't say it quite that bluntly but inferred it pretty strongly.

Being an Independent though, I can say that I also get them from the other side claiming that if I don't vote for them I'm somehow unpatriotic or don't support the troops or more recently a sexist of some kind.

Let's not pretend that it's only one side or one faction or one group that plays this little game. The game is universal.

Snurrble... your opinion of the UN (one I probably share by the way and which once again wasn't the point of my post) has absolutely nothing to do with my use of the term racism. It just happened to be the cite by Wiki.

If you prefer some kind of long form... different treatment on the basis of ethnicity or something of that nature... fine, use it.

The point was that no matter who's doing it to who, my opinion is that it's not right. So far, you haven't bothered to address that, preferring to deliver little semantics lectures instead which I assure you I don't need.

I consider it my god given right to not like anyone that I don't want to like for any reason that I choose.

I don't care who doesn't like me, as long as they don't whine and wimper because I don't like them. If I wandered into a store and they said, "We don't serve Honkeys, get out!" I'd say, "My mistake and leave."

Nofs, help me out here. This guy is starting to remind me of somebody and I can't remember who. He just types to hear himself. Talks out of both sides of his mouth too. Who am I thinking of?
