First tangent: smaller store employees, do not feel so bad. Even Herald Square suffers similar problems with some of the merchandise. We've been through situations where they would advertise a shoe that has been either marked down or sold out two months ago. The largest shoe department of them all does not carry Karen Scott, and those pictures showing clearance is horrible. They always show some shoe that sold out like around a year ago, and some ghetto--I mean--outstanding customer comes over with a catalog wanting that exact shoe. Still doesn't beat Macy's advertising a Charles David boot that they never even made (it was a prototype of their look for the season.)
I haven't been to Nordstrom. I heard their associate handbook for many years was a single sheet of paper. Does anyone know if it is true or not? I know that Lord & Taylor solicits their card because they have asked, but were not aggressive like Macy's (and this is coming from the flagship.) Not to mention, when I went to buy a fragrance, it was the first time I did not feel overwhelmed or forced to buy a certain one. I actually had a good time conversing with the sales associate. I don't even know where Kohls is around NYC, but I don't like their clothing anyway. It's much too conservative for my tastes. Admittedly, I do like some of the stuff Macy's sells, but the advertising is so lame, tame, and horrible that it is a turnoff. Homogenization to avoid controversy is not the way to go, particularly when a company supposedly embraces diversity (meanwhile, explain CHRISTmas.) Also, Macy's actually needs to find people who know what to actually do, rather than some thug or prima donna to work and award them for their lackluster service.

BTW, whatever happened to macysinsider? Am I actually giving more inside info than that dude?
Welcome sir. If in doubt, just refer the customer to Herald Square. That should be interesting, particularly if your store is in the middle of the United States.

yeah depends on volume and location. If company doesn't think you can house it, you can't sell it! Funny thing though is that this also includes advertised sale items.

I think the only other solution is to send the customer to Gimbels.

Actually, I don't drink. I merely send the customers to the back, grab the chloroform, and send them to the subsubbasement.

Actually, they also believe in hiring wanted murderers for associates as well. I heard the story about that in my store. Not to mention of the associate who brought a sword over and was about to do damage to a manager. For the latter, all I have to say sarcastically is I wonder why.

I cannot say much about the murderer other than I heard he was wanted in other states, and obviously no background check was done.
The one about the sword, a manger had pushed an associate over the edge. She told the manager she'll be right back. When she came back, she had a sword.
Quite apparently, Macy's takes just about anyone.
There was also the stories of security being guilty of racial profiling. One incident involved an African American woman being put in security for questioning. Security insisted she was shoplifting, but had let her go. She came back with a lawsuit. Turns out she was a lawyer. There was another one where they brought a former criminal in for questioning. Whether he stole or not was never mentioned. What was mentioned was that he tried to hang himself. This stuff can actually be found in the papers.
The last one I have to mention happened to a coworker's daughter. Security followed her around since she was wearing a new Columbia jacket. My coworker's daughter noticed they were following her, so she waited for the right moment to suddenly stop to bump the security guards. She turned around and told them that the Columbia jacket is hers. She paid for it herself, and if they really want a badge, she told them to earn it themselves. With that, she pulled out her police badge.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of my managers told me one time to treat all customers as if they were royalty because you never know who they are... It has proven true many times (though the customers you want to chloroform just get treated like the garbage they are)

You mean royal pain the asses? LOL!
Okay here's my story. I've told it before but it was just too bizarre. At my store, Macy's hired a registered sex offender (allegedly he had served prison time for molesting a kid) and they didn't do a thorough background check. Well it turned out, they put in the children's department until someone blew the whistle and they let him go! Go figure.

The person who did the background check should have been terminated as well. There is no excuse for that. HMPH! Note to self stay away from Ex's old store.

Stay away from the store I work in as well. Good luck being the one I work in is a major tourist attraction.

Be afraid, especially of this worker in shoes by the name of Burger. He likes to walk around with bottles of chloroform and slap people with fish. He can easily be spotted since he is the worker who is all in black.

BTW, call me a geek, but wouldn't you think that if a company is celebrating 150 years, they would do something involving the history of the store? I'm kinda disappointed with the campaign. I would have loved to see pictures of the 14th Street store on display (nice building) and of some of the things they used to do. Using their tagline, it would really show the magic of the store brand. I guess I can expect that happening when the medical department in the building reopens.

In my store, there was an older lady that was intimidating and blackmailing the younger associates into giving her rides, giving her their credits, and giving her money! YES! She would either tell them that she was going to beat them up, or if she found out something about them, she would threaten to tell their parents. Finally, someone told security that they "feared for their life", and it all came out.
I thought it was hillarious.
