Belk is the same way! I applied at Belk for the past summer and they gave one of those bloody tests! What a waste of time! JC Penney also gives the test and they will flat out tell you that you don't meet their qualifications during the application process.

The actual math questions were more like logic questions. They had a list of numbers like:
1 2 4 8 16, what is the next number? It would be 32. But the English questions were a little weird, like:
ceiling is to floor as sky is to... I said ground. I didn't really know what that had to do with retail.

Yes Polli! I am listening! The IQ tests are designed to ensure you have the qualities of the world's most intelligent men of retail.
Eddie Lampert and Terry Lundgren!

I had my interview. It was with the sales manager for Tools, Lawn Care and Sporting Goods. I told her that I had sold Sporting Goods before. She asked me what I knew about Tools, and I told her I knew the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver. I asked her what the pay would be, and she said $6/hr. plus commission. I asked about benefits, and she didn't know. Seems that it is a holiday position. They also had a position selling TV's, which I have done before. It was straight commission. I hate that idea, as that is like being on a tightrope without a net. She asked what I would do with an unruly customer. She also said that associates were expected to be honest. They are expected to sell one credit a day plus warranties. One can get a employee discount using any form of payment. She couldn't believe that Macy's require a charge card for the discount. This was the initial interview. Then, they were going to have callbacks with the job starting Nov. 15th. I think I'll continue to look.

Don't worry, I'll tell you what to do with an unruly customer; tie them up with some rope or chain, whichever you have in the tool department, string them over one of the swingsets, and hit them in the head with your best-selling hammer. That should do it. And if anyone asks you if you did that to the customer, say yes, since they expect you to be honest.

$6/hr plus commission? At least Macy's gave me $8/hr plus 1% commission and no raise for four years until I left or they fired me. (Depends on how you look at it.)

South, I say that you just go back to Macy's and clock in and go to work!
South - why don't you call a district manager at Macy's or Corporate HR, if you left on good terms then they should rehire you. Sounds like a vendetta to me.
What about Belk? You could always go back. Do you have a Belk in your area?

Yes, we have a bunch of Belks. I have put in so many applications that I have actually lost count. And, to those afraid that I might leave this group, think again. You guys are my buddies.

Thanks. I have applied at some of those, but I forgot about Best Buy. I could wear one of those cool blue shirts.
