Retail anchor leaving Lafayette Square

Sears Holdings Corp. has notified the state of plans to close its store at Lafayette Square Mall.
The struggling retailer is laying off 110 employees at the department store and an automotive center at Lafayette Road and West 38th Street, due to “a change in business circumstances,” the company said in a notice filed yesterday with the state.
The move could be a devastating blow to the mall’s new owner, Ashkenazy Acquisition Corp. of New York, which has been working to stem an exodus of retailers since it bought the 113-acre property from locally based Simon Property Group late last year. The company is investing $12 million in a revamp that includes a go-kart track and amusement center to replace one of two already-vacant anchor spaces.
Sears plans to stay open through the holidays. Its notice to the state gives a closing date of Jan. 11, 2009.
Shares in the Illinois-based holding company that operates Sears and Kmart stores have fallen about 50 percent over the last year as consumer spending slowed. Shares were trading recently at $60.54 each.

Irondequoit Kmart is closing
Deborah Alexander • Staff writer • September 16, 2008
The Kmart at 999 E. Ridge Road in Irondequoit is scheduled to close on or about Nov. 12.
Kimberly Freely, a spokeswoman for Sears Holding Corp., said that the store is closing for business reasons, adding that no other Kmart or Sears stores are closing in the Rochester area at this time.
Last month, Sears Holding Corp. reported a 62 percent drop in fiscal second quarter earnings. The retailer cut its full-year earning forecast because the weak economy is keeping consumers away from Sears and Kmart stores.
Freely said Irondequoit store employees have been told of the closing. She did not immediately know how many people were employed there. A severance package is available to Kmart employees who qualify based on number of years and hours worked, she said.
“We are hopeful they will take positions at nearby Sears and Kmart stores,” Freely said.
Kmart operates about 1,300 stores nationwide. Freely said the only other Kmart slated to close is in Utah.

Sears closing Oregon parts store, one of 48 closures nationwide
OPEI SmartBrief | 09/17/2008
Sears plans to shutter its parts store in Medford, Ore., next month as part of a nationwide shutdown of 48 stores. The parts store occupies one-third of the Sears Service Center, which will remain open. Customers will still be able to order parts online or by calling a toll-free number. Yep kids, it's falling apart. Not enough crazy glue, dental floss, and duct tape in the world is going to keep it from happening. Question is, how long can they keep it quiet?? I heard last night or Friday night that Linen's and Things will be closing all of it's stores.

Linens n Things closed all of their stores where I'm located. Pretty sad if you ask me. Tons of retailers both large and small are feeling the effects of the economy.
K-mart isn't within a 50 mile radius of me. They closed their stores down years ago. I'm thinking because the local economy didn't shop K-mart for any of their needs.

The USA destroyed it's own economy sending all the jobs over seas with the trade adjustment act. Of course no one has money to shop. Now see if the government can bring people from overseas to shop here.

48 parts or FLS stores? I know they want to eliminate walk-in parts.
