Yes, this is probably the 3rd thread on this subject.
My apologies.

8 Kmart, 4 Sears stores to close Jan. 31
From Sandra Jones, Chgo Tribune 10/20
| Quote: |
Sears plans to shutter department stores at malls in Indianapolis and in Florissant, Mo.
It also intends to close a Sears Grand in Columbia, S.C., and a Sears Essentials in St. Petersburg.
|
| Quote: |
The Grand and Essentials formats are free-standing stores that under previous management were intended as growth vehicles.
Edward Lampert, Sears chairman and the investor who owns a majority of the company, halted that program |
Halted the Grands and Essentials or the growth?
No list for the 8 Kmarts...

Actually, Eddie has earned his nickname (one among many of course), "Fast Eddie". I really thought it would take him at least five years to come to this point. He's accomplished it in three.
Somebody needs to tell him that he's also been beaten to the "Use a venerable retailer name for an overpriced strictly on line retail organization" idea too. Montgomery Ward's has been doing it for several years now.

Bit by bit, piece by piece, store by store or employee by employee;just nibble away so you can just justifying layoffs and closings as part 'the normal course of business'
But as someone pointed out in the comments section it is NOT normal to be closing stores.
You might have to close stores but should you have to-no.

Given the way the business in my store has been, I fully expect my store to be one of the ones that closes. And, in a crazy turn of events, I actually am looking forward to the day it happens.

It apparently has to be REALLY dead to be considered an underperforming store. None of the stores in my area have been closed (yet at least) and these places are almost all ghost towns. These are 100,000 s.f. stores with barely enough business to keep one register going.

New quote? from Kimberly Freely reported by Reuters
UPDATE 1-Sears Holdings to close 12 stores
Interesting denial?

The closures are "part of our normal course of business of opening and closing stores,"
spokeswoman Kimberly Freely said, adding, "It's not part of a greater issue."

People's livelyhood is at stake and that's what she comes up with. I wonder how long she'd last living on what we make and from paycheck to paycheck.

I noticed 2 Florida stores closing,a housing boom state.And a S C Sears Grand.
All three of those stores were either a Grand,Essentials or Kmart;the boxes of the future-ppffftttt.
It makes you wonder if the original Grand experiments and results were in boom areas;especially the Calif and Las Vegas Grands.Even the Utah Grand was in a area that just had a winter Olympics.
As little as Sears and Kmart targeted 'boom' customers perhaps the boom did keep Sears alive a little longer in that when people move or work in a new/different area they look for a familiar name when shopping.Until they actually become familiar with local economy.

I live near the Sarasota Kmart that is closing. It is near a mall and is an older Kmart. Small volume store but they had neglected the store for years. In fact the store ran for the past couple years with no appointed store manager. They would put assistants in and have someone answer for the store but never gave title or salary. The DM is this part of the country is absolutely horrible. Even before the economy fell apart her district had some of the worst results. And she believes in managing hard which has caused mass firings and extremely high turnover.(including management in store) The results were screaming bad management but the good ones ran away. The unemployment in this area of the country is near 8% and the county below near 9%. The Kmart up the road from this one has few cars in the parking lot and little help. And another one which has no pernament store manager. A few months ago they fired some fulltime people out of the store that is closing and demoted others. I wish they would fire the DM and her followers and had returned to being merchants but I think the writing is on the wall and I think there will be more out of this area of the country.

One of the new dealer stores, right? They're talking about a couple of those for our area. We only have one Sears store in the county right now and if the concept works out, it might be an answer for those in other communities in the county who simply don't want to drive here to shop.
