Because I wanted to work for free and help Sears look good in the media by pressuring customers for Heros for Home Donations.

We's all young once.
With me, no one else would hire a good worker.

I realize this thread is a joke, but I do have a message to send to young people. I am a great reason to stay in school and get an education after high school. When I graduated high school, I had a paper route and cut grass during the summer and shoveled snow in the winter. I started doing this when I was 10. I decided when I graduated I was going to take a "year off" because I deserved it. Plus my mother had MS and I also felt I was more needed at home. I figured I could go to school anytime. If you don't do it right away, you'll never do it. My first "real" job that gave me a paper paycheck was delivering pizza's in the summer of '85. Let me tell you, I had a LOT of fun that summer! So much fun, I was 19 and had what I thought was a lot of money. I went out one night and got drunk and got into a real bad car accident. Thank God the guy I hit was ok. I still have flashbacks of that night. I broke my arm in that accident, and you'd be amazed that's all I had if you'd seen my car. I didn't have any right walking away from that. 5 weeks later I got my cast off and I was scheduled for physical therapy but I was lucky enough to land a job at Sears on Sept 19, 1985 at PPU. What better physical therapy than that? I was just hired as seasonal help. But I was lucky enough to impress other managers along the way, I was never out of a job for more than a day. 23 years later, hey I'm still employed! It's real easy to get sucked into retail, but make sure you have an education to get out.

LK, some of us were lucky to get a higher education. The field that I chose likes to hire people with at least a Master's Degree to be competitive. I simply did not have the grades to go to Graduate School. I'm not stupid but I've always been one of those that had to study my butt off to get a C in some cases. Some people do try, though.

Then your up on me USA. At least you tried and worked your butt off. I never did. I got sucked in and figured "in time" something would come along. Next thing you know, you're in for the long haul. Those are the people I'm talking to. As soon as I hear any young person at Sears that's in their late teens, early 20's saying they are taking time off to "find themselves", don't do it at Sears. But when I was that age it was different. It was possible to climb up the coperate ladder without an education. The rules changed on me though. And now, I don't want any part of management.

Boy, if only I could go back in time...kids DO NOT REALIZE how easy they have it until they have to go out there and actually MAKE A LIVING AND PAY THE BILLS. Higher education or not, its hell.

Once upon a time - retail was a career.
You are never too old to go back to school - if you want to - and there are ways to do so for most people.
I do have a business degree and was told I would go into management - well I realize that was a lie - I am not a teenager standing around texting on my cell phone - so no promotion for me at Sears.
For me it is now just a few bucks a week - I still have a strong work ethic and work hard - but this company has become quite a joke.

I took this job at the time after sustaining a serious injuries as a Machinist. Having to put myself through school, could make my own schedule. What have I gained from this job?
1. Gained three degrees
2. having my company charge redicouls rates for my refernces, which makes it almost impossible to find other work
3. Very depleeted bank accounts
4. food stamps
5. aniexty
6. and no more hair on my head, from years of dealing with the ridicouls games that the leads (coachs) lol have ifilcted on me and others who are trying to leave this sinking ship.
the fingers ready to flush

Three degrees? Did you major in English?
I've never heard of a company charging for references. How's that work?

Yeah there were some posts a few months back about it. I don't think they were doing it everywhere... more like a pilot program.

it seemed like a good idea at the time. I was collecting unemployment and needed a job and my boyfriend (now my husband) thought it would be cool if I worked at Sears so he could get a discount on tools. When I was hired I found out that I could work pt, receive health insurance and go to college with 75% tuition reimbursement. Now I no longer work for Sears, have a college degree and am an independent business owner.

Do I understand that one Term! I'm to the point where I forget a customers face an hour after they leave, but I'll describe a Penguins game to my son I saw 30 years ago. My favorite line to new people that look to me for guidence, "I've forgotten more than you'll ever know." I've heard rumors that quit drinking, eat healthy, take certain drugs can enhance long term memory for people our age, but like I said, only rumors.
