Surprised

1. Cash-strapped consumers are buying baby formula at the beginning of the month, when they have more money.
2. A double digit decline in the use of credit cards in the second quarter.
3. 80% of consumers surveyed by Walmart say "personal financial security" is their top concern. Formerly, it was the price of gasoline.
4. Purchases of generics have doubled.
5. Shoppers are changing how often they visit the store. Some come more often because they have less money and can only afford small purchases. Some come less often to save gas.
6. Walmart now sees a 2.5% sales increase in the middle of the month, when paychecks are handed out. Rolling Eyes http://consumerist.com/5067111/walmart-6-disturbing-behaviors-exhibited-by-consumers

But Sears is doing what it can to regain shopper confidence, they raised the PA price, I think it will help.

Since Walmart's customers are predominantly those who are first and most affected by any economic downturns no matter how small, none of this is surprising.

I've always said that if you want to know how the economy is doing, you don't go ask some two bit government hack whose only goal is to keep himself from looking bad.

OH the humanity!

WHAT?,customers shopping with commonsense and seemingly getting their priorities straight like buying formula with cash.Oh my goodness-customers saving money buying generics.

That's it,the world's coming to an end.

Don't worry DR. The advertising agencies are doing their part. They'll have those people right back in those stores spending more than they've got before you even know it.

That's for sure....and it's pitiful that they are in that kind of business. Right now, there will be no 'gotta haves' this time around. Food is much more important than things.

I've got a question... somebody help me out.

The average, debt riddled American has been blamed for our economy's problems. Too much debt - living beyond their means. Too much credit. Afterall, it's not the banker's fault that that new homeowner can't pay their mortgage, is it?

Here's my confusion...
If it's Joe Plumbers fault... why is it then, that all I hear from political idiots is that we must bail out the country? The businesses.

They say we must save our small businesses... they can't make their payroll - IF THEY CAN'T GET THAT LOAN to pay their people.

And banks won't loan to each other.

Okay... someone please explain why it's Joe's fault that our economy is crashing ... when most of this country's businesses depend on credit to sustain themselves???

I'm guessing that our political mouthpieces are talking from both sides of their mouths.

Please help me... I'm so confused.

There's an even better way to save money, nurse your baby the way God intended. It's better for them and it's free.

Underlying the whole house of cards is Joe Plumber dutifully making the payments on the house and the credit accounts. Joe's debt is the politician's hedge fund asset. They aren't bailing out the country, just themselves.

this is true. If they wanted to truly help us then they could have given each of you about $50,000 instead of bailing out big business. That sure would have stimulated my economy.

Strange, I pay by credit card more than ever - only paying by cash when necessary (like when I make an employee purchase at Kmart/Sears). My credit card gives me cash back on each use - my checkbook doesn't. Of course, the key is that I only purchase things that I can faithfully afford. With discipline, there is no reason for anyone not to take advantage of the free perks given away by credit card companies. Very Happy
