My store must be the worst Macy's in the world to work for! Every week they come up with new gimmicks to torture us. Now they have decided to have manager wolf packs to come and surround associates on the selling floor and ask them questions about their metrics.

My store is OBSESSED with metrics. Twice I have been assaulted by this manager posse, headed by the STORE MANAGER. Could they make us any more uncomfortable??? Each wolf pack has about 10 managers involved. As if we're not stressed enough. And my manager picked me to be the guinea pig -- twice!!! They brought out the metrics books and asked me questions about my metrics. Fortunately, they are going up! Then they asked me what I could do to improve my metrics.

I have to tell you that when I feel attacked I go on the defensive. I feel cornered and ready to attack!

You know what else has happened on my floor??? I have been designated as the cleaning person for the whole department. You see, there is one part of my dept. that is always messy because it is in the back (I work in a large dept.) Two of the associates in my dept. absolutely REFUSE to clean it, so I always get stuck doing it.

So guess what??? There is a dept. on our floor that works on commission. Some of the items in MY dept. are commission items for THAT dept. Now they are allowed to go back there, get sales from OUR dept.'s merchandise, toss the merchandise all over the floor and countertops and then I'M supposed to clean it!!! The manager of the commissioned dept. told me clearly that since it's my dept. I have to clean it, not them. They leave such a mess! While everyone is ringing up sales, I'm supposed to clean! They have $300 sales goals (some depts have $100 sales goals!) and I have $3000-4000 sales goals! I leave the stuff on the counter and have to sneak away so that I can get to a register in another area and ring! I'm supposed to spend my weekends cleaning during PEAK selling times, while everyone rings!

Also, our store has been overrun by mice and rats! There are mice running around the selling floor! The employee lunchroom has roaches in the refrigerator and running around the microwaves. There are rodents in the lunchroom too! However, the store manager treated all the dept. managers to dinner one night! Do the associates ever get any food??? I mean real food not junk cookies from the local supermarket!

I HATE, HATE, HATE THIS STORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My store is run by trolls!

I'm truly sorry to hear about your store. I have a feeling this thread will soon prove that you're not alone in feeling the way you do.

Putting associates on the defensive -- whether through "coaching", the blasted scorecard, or passive-aggressive criticism -- has become a key management tool.

It didn't used to be like this. It sucks.

Today I just about went off on yet another manager -- and prior to this fall season, a friend -- who demanded to know why I was in a stockroom and not on the selling floor. There were no customers, and I told her I was returning items to backstock and looked at her like she was a crazy person. I was stunned when I realized she wasn't kidding around. She practically "shooed" me back out to the selling floor. WTF???

Each week I'm seeing more and more of the same kind of behavior from managers: It seems they're being directed to intentionally engage in patronizing behavior, treating associates as if we're clueless first-graders. I'm getting this kind of condescention from nearly every manager (there's one left who's clearly a rebel and unfortunately may not make it through the year) at least once a week for the last month. I've just about had it. I've spent a decade in this store. I won't stand for disrespect.

I'ts terrible isn't it? I think they want us to quit, so that they can hire new workers for $7.50 an hour. Of course, those newbies will be kids who will refuse to work. Our floor is trashed half the time because most people won't clean.

We have another newbie in our dept. The second day she was there she said that she shouldn't have to work on Sundays, and that they should create a schedule to HER specifications. I said that retail demands nights and weekends and that's just part of the deal. She's also one of those that refuses to clean that difficult area of my department.

I was there before every manager in the store. They'll have to drag me out and lock the door behind me.

I'm not a quitter.

Oh, and get this! One of the guys in the commissioned department told me that I had to ring the commissioned items for him --- in ringer mode! Then he left the department a mess, stuff on the floor and the counters, for his personal maid -- ME -- to clean. He also decided to fly paper airplanes while customers are around and stand back on his heels and sleep standing up! I told his manager this and he still said that I had to clean up after this slob!!!

This girl said this not because of church, but because it wreaks havoc on her social life.

By the way, can I call the health dept. anonymously???

I don't see why not. It would be retribution if you got fired. It is a health issue. Better you than a customer.

I'm going to somehow do it anonymously. Trust me, my store would fire me in a minute if they thought I reported them. This is a store that (illegally) threatened to fire people if they joined a union!

I'm still trying to figure out how not to have to clean up after other people who deliberately make messes.

These scorecards are in royal pain in my ass! All they are there for is to tell us that its our fault for low sales and not the economy's fault. Plus full time and part time should NOT be together. Our commissioned depts expect us to ring up everything we sell that they get a commission on in their number too. NOT!!!! Especially after doing all the ground work for the customer(s) and then have them get all the glory??? Don't think so! They claim we are taking food off their dinner table. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!! What about our productivity? They are getting commission PLUS productivity and all we are getting is productivity. Get this...their goals are a whopping 500.00, sometimes 700. and very very rarely, 1,000. They sell a couple big ticket items and they're done for the day and maybe even the week. All commissioned depts should be their own entity. Oh by the way, we are not permitted to ring under someone else's number unless that person is able to input their own numbers on the register if they are busy with another customer. We were told its a security issue. Bottom line, if I'm helping a customer with something from a commissioned dept, that sale is MINE, baby! All mine! Rock on!

there are 2 people who work in our men's suit commission dept who keep the register on ringer mode. i ALWAYS take it off that mode. i've told em point blank, if i have to be here ( i hate that section. hate it.) i damn well am ringing under my number. i don't care if it's a suit or anything. that will teach them NOT to request me over there.

Why don't you ask them to ring the items they don't get commission on for you!

Screw the whole commission thing! Why doesn't Macy's just pay their usual small hourly? It's not like commission makes any big dent in their paychecks. When use to be in their fine jewelry, I got 1% commission (a joke) plus a mimimum wage hourly and believe me I didn't see much of a difference on my paycheck. They set $1000 goals for me and expected me to sell regular priced merchandise even though the crap went on sale the next week and customer's always WANTED TO WAIT until the stupid thing got discounted plus what ever crappy percent off went on top of that so they can later return it after wearing the item out to some shindig! Meanwhile, my sales always suffered and they always threatened to fire me but they never did because NO ONE wanted to work for my department with that kind of pay and responsibility in that department. Gee and you wonder why many employees are disgruntled! Nice going Corporate losers! Doh!

I also forgot this! The roof of my store resembles Swiss cheese! It's over 40 years old and there are so many holes in the roof that whenever it rains we get dripping water from the ceiling -- on the selling floor and in the stock rooms. It looks bad because we constantly have to put wastebaskets under the drips (and put barriers around the wastebaskets because they customers just shove the wastebaskets aside). There are certain areas in our stock rooms where we've learned to NEVER place merchandise because it just gets destroyed my the water! The roof was finally inspected, after years of this crap, and it was full of holes.

Also, our stockrooms have this fuzzy-looking stuff on the ceilings and pipes. Some of us were convinced it was asbestos or something but the store claims that they inspectors from the state in to prove that it isn't.

For years our escalators would stop suddenly and customers were get thrown off and injured. Once I heard screams and knew that it happened AGAIN. I called the store managers office and they said the SM would be right out but it took at least 10 minutes for the SM and OM to show up even though they were on the same floor. I got upset because people were crying and screaming and I complained to my then dept. manager about it, that I was sick of this happening over and over again. He wrote me up for complaining -- but I refused to sign it.

I'm telling you, it is the store from hell.

Fashion, the only items in the area they don't get commission on is underwear, socks and sleepwear. they are not permitted to ring under anyone else's number except within their own dept.

But if they are asking you to ring for them, ask them to do the same in return and see what their answer is!

Easy enough to find out. If the state says it's OK, then there's a record of the inspection that can be checked publicly.
