Rock on! This is my first post. I am a Dollar General Manager. I went through the 7 habits training in July. My store is nothing like I was led to believe. My AM just started in May and he has no idea how to run a store. They told us at a recent Mgr. meeting that DG would lose 250 mil in shrink, this year. And they think that it has nothing to do with what they pay. Confused I must admit that I am paid well but my asst. makes $7.55 per hour. Avg. 32 hrs a week. This company is a mess. Surprised

Hi DGBOB, and welcome to the forum! Very Happy

It hasn't taken you long to catch on to the fact that the company is a mess, and that the pay for asst mgrs and below stinks. The one thing you may find yourself reevaluating at some point, however, is whether your own pay is all that good or not.

Keep track of the actual number of hours you wind up working each week, and divide them into your salary. When your hours go high enough, and your average pay per hour drops to the asst mgr range -- without overtime compensation -- you may start drawing a different conclusion.

If you're currently not putting in excessive hours, DON'T START doing so -- not even on a "temporary basis" to deal with a short-term situation of some kind. Trust me on this. Once you start, there's no regaining control of your hours. If you prove that you CAN do the work of 2 or 3 people, it becomes expected of you, and the choice is no longer yours.

So, except for occasionally covering someone's shift due to a call-in (if you absolutely have to), do not get into the habit of staying late to finish something up, or coming in your day off to "catch up on things), etc. And don't feel obligated to schedule yourself open-to-close most of the time in order to control payroll.
It's a job -- keep it in perspective and take care of yourself!

Just some friendly advice! Smile
