Months in the making, the time has finally come to run a public test of our new chat server.

Feedback is mandatory! Evil or Very Mad

ATM I'm particularly interested in feedback about speed/responsiveness and stability.

Caveats:
  1. You must have a java enabled browser in order to run the chat client. You can download the latest java runtime here
  2. You'll need your forum username and password to gain access.
  3. Only registered forum members with at least 10 posts can access the system. Unregistered peeps or members with <10 posts will be denied access. Should you make your 10th post sometime during this test and find that you're still being denied access, please be patient as the user database refreshes itself only every 30 minutes.
  4. Turn your speaker volume down! This program currenly plays a short audio clip (doh!) when it throws as error and has scared the bejebus out of me on more than one occasion.

Please report any issues in this thread.

Oh! And keep your fingers crossed - I don't even know if this is going to work! Wink

edit: taken down while I try to solve the errors.

Issue 1: private messaging doesn't appear to work.

edit: It looks as though trying to send a PM to someone may lock up their instance of the client requiring them to leave then re-enter the room and/or log out and in again..

Going down for a few minutes.

edit: back up again. PMing should be fixed.

Looks good to me. Instantaneous responses to input, fast loading. Not much testing I could do in there by myself but what I was able to test produced very satisfactory results. Real test will be when you get a whole bunch of people in there at once.

Indeed. I hope my itty-bitty boXen can manage the load.

What did you think of the interface?

I think it's excellent. Simple and functional. I was worried about my Mozilla browser not handling the java applet because I run across a lot of sites that are IE specific for whatever reasons but it seemed to go pretty much flawlessly.

Cool.

Which version of mozilla do you use?

I swear by firefox so you shouldn't have any problems 'round here. Wink

I use 1.7.X or SeaMonkey as it's called now that a new development team is taking it over. I've used Firefox and liked it but I just like having everything in one place and the suite fills that bill for me.

I stick with the stand-alone apps'. I like to hack 'em so it's easier to re-install them when I (inevitably) break them.

Private messaging is still somewhat borked. It works but you can't read the white text on the white background. Rolling Eyes

Hey I've been pretty successful with this one. Wink Check out the screenshots of the source distribution... teh ugly!

Having no prior experience with java, I now know just enough about it to be dangerous! Mr. Green

Access Denied. Surprised Too Funny.

I'll try at a later date, but I know I just wouldnt have time to chat EVER, though I would love to get together with everybody!!! Very Happy

Finally! All those nights praying to the little green buddha on my nightstand (and occasionally rubbing his naked tummy) are about to pay off. Thank you for your efforts. Smile

I was just denied access too. Doh!

edit: ok, the access denied errors should be fixed.

Anyone have some suggestions for default rooms?

Let's try this again... edit: removed so I can fix the PM feature

I believe that the connection issues were caused by a service that I wrote to maintain the user tables for this application. I could be wrong though. Smile Only one way to find out!

Okay, everything appears to be sorted out. PMing is fixed and the connection issues shouldn't be a problem anymore. All I need now are a boatload of people to go in there, use it, then report back any problems they experience.

Does anybody want the ability to store your ignored user list for future sessions?

It's a server I built specifically for this application.

The application requires a java plugin for your browser (link in the first post in this thread).

It looks great, sleK. To answer your question about the user ignore list... LOL, I've never ignored a user before. Wink

Hope I get an opportunity to use your chatroom! I've taken on a SECOND JOB in hopes of putting a little cash back in the bank. Doh!

Oh, how I sure do miss my great big sears paycheck!

Impeccable timing msguru!

You attempted to log in almost exactly 8 hours after the previous log in and thus gave me the hint I needed to correctly diagnose the problem.

Now I need only wait a few more hours to see if my fix works... which kinda sucks: write the code, compile it, deploy it, then wait 8 hours to test it. Rolling Eyes
