|
|
|
It amazes how many minimum wage employers seek the totally dedicated, fully devoted 'yes' employee for minimum wage, little or no benefits and demeaning management.Currently at Sears they have full fledged banners, signs and ads saying things like 'upto 20$ an hour',employee recruitment awards and kiosk with computerized testing. If you apply and succeed at filling out the '... highly sofisticated computer based application... ' you must wait, pray and gamble that the manager who supposed to interview you will even greet you even though in the building then you must 'pass' a couple more interviews and test all for a 6.50 / hour part-time job. It's not brain surgergy.

I especially love how Lowe's and Target and some others make you take that 20-30 minute long "personality quiz" when you put in an application. WTF is that all about?

Tell me about it...I remember I had to take one of those personality tests when I applied at Sears...totally assinine...these jobs are not rocket science jobs for God's sake...with some of the employees we have now, I'm surprised they even passed the tests...

Sears does that too? I didn't know that, of course back when I applied (in 2000) they still had paper applications!

Too me when in need I would just emphasize a criminal background check, check some the application information and ask the manager that will be USING them if they want them or not.But a recent trend of creating the ' specialist ' entry level job title makes it even more difficult to hire especially with computers analyzing the application.Even more puzzling is that I see companies go up to a year without hiring or finding the 'perfect' candidate and yet refuse to give things out like raises, overtime or bonuses to the existing short staff or they get back to an applicant MONTHS after they applied and wonder why they don't want the job now.All this for what is normally a high-turn over job anyway-ooops,then they'll have to admit they won't pay squat.

I've seen people 'coached' on how to answer personality and pyschological test in many different industries which the management people have got to know is going on.Test and HR software companies job security I guess.

Reminds me of the Civil Service promotional exams in my old outfit. Many many times during my last 10-15 years with the department, I used to see the chiefs holding private special little training classes and coaching sessions strictly for those in whom they "had a special interest" and wanted to make sure got the goodies.
Not on firefighting, not on supervison, not even on management but solely on how to pass a written promotional exam with the minimum score and then be able to "sell" yourself to the oral examination panel.
So even in an organization that had strict and rigid rules on paper in regard to promotions and raises, it still wasn't what you knew but who you bl... er, knew in about 8 out of 10 cases. Probably a major reason why we had the Great Fire Debacle and Cathouse Massacre out here in 2003.

This test is the perfect example of how self perpetuating things have become in the HR INDUSTRY.Again is this process worth it when companies go 6 months to a year trying to fill positions. This is another example of the YES mentality or CULTure training currently being implemented at Sears. They literally want people that think alike but do they really. This test is coachable:customer first, customer is always right-don't argue-answer 'positively' with that in mind-done coaching. How often does a manager say only if they had this or that:re the ideal company criteria. There's obviously certain 'negative' answers but one would have to lie to become the perfect YES person, member or soldier.Read an article on certain 'skill sets' or the necessity of college and this test is someone justifying their job.If as a manager or HR you cannot judge or deal with people more than likely you've de-selected yourself from these jobs in the past.

During background checks many employers have signals or code they use when dealing with applicants as do these tests but do these 'signals' or answers really tell the story.I just see too many applicants and no hires at places like Sears. Is the ultimate minimum wage customer service employee a realistic possibility.I've seen welfare to work employees thumb their nose at the corporate bs and leave and yet these are the very employees/applicants these companies think they can blackmail into the job.

I remember a question for Sam's Club's application that went something like "true of false: At my last job I was often late but I'm over that now". I even asked the manager (I refuse to call them "coaches") what part am I answering? I was NOT frequently late for my last job so there is nothing to be over now but if I say "no" then it is assumed that I'll be late all of the time. This is too much brain activity for a Sam's Club application.
The one thing that Sears has taught me is that intellectual reasoning (and grammar) have NO place in the retail world.
