Its no surprise that the Russians have invaded. Putin has made it very clear that he is all for returning to the glory that was Mother Russia of old.
I expect that the endgame will see South Ossetia returned to Russia, and perhaps a period of unrest in Abkhazia, with independence a possibility.
Our interest here include a vital oil pipeline that runs through the country, and a resurgent Imperialist Russia. If they are able to destabilize and re-conquer these lands, are any of their former vassal states safe?

At first I thought this was nothing but a temper tantrum but after seeing the week of events Mother Russia never stopped fighting the cold war.
I'm begining to think we're going to see with Russia and neighbors the same hostilities cut loose in Yugoslovia.Throw in repressed attitudes twards certain political & religious groups ,unemployed military and ex commies trying to go capitalist you have the perfect recipe for this stuff.
It's still a power grap but those grapping the power understand and are exploiting all those repressed attitudes.
And a scarey analogy is that this is a possible future picture of countries like Iraq. You have centuries of hostilities between certain religious and political factions that will surface when the US leaves.
With these older countries and peoples you have to make the transition from old to new as fast, clean and prosperous as possible otherwise the new regime is just another obstacle before they fight who they really want to fight.

And those of us who never stopped seeing the communists (and don't tell me those old hardliners aren't exactly the same people they were 30 years ago before the "fall") as still THE major threat to world security have been laughed at and ridiculed by those who would make a few bucks because they owned a few shares in companies run by people getting rich importing cheap assed and dangerous communist made goods. Go figure.
