Hi They want to make me a Christmas shop manager for the holidays. It will start Sept-Jan. What do you think? Do you think it is easy, hard fun. Last year I was the CSM or SSM and it was so fun and easy. Any comments will be helpful. Think you!

Historicially, the trim manager gets in line to be a sales manager later. The only down side is that your body will be saturated with glitter and you will be sick of Christmas music.

That is what they told me to. The christmas manager last year is now a GSM for my store now.

But they become sales managers if they succeed as trim captains. If the trim department is just so so, they trim captain goes back into the sales pool. Also, if you take it, Money, do one thing that will save your butt from unruly customers. Do an inventory of the trees you have on hand in boxes. Keep up with the count. If you don't, you will have some very mad customers close to Christmas. Just a word to the wise.

I was talking to the trim manager from last year and she told me the same thing to make a log book.

It starts in September. You have to set up the dept., usually with the help of visual. You have to open all the boxes of ornaments and other product and organize the ornaments by tree, as each tree has a particular theme. The target date is always Labor Day, but that is usually impossible, so as soon before Oct. 1st as possible is imperative. The job will go until a week or two after Christmas. You have to be around for the massive after-Christmas sales, when they buy for next year. Oh, and they may ask you to do inventory. You will have a lot of breakage which should be MOS'd.

So do you think it will be a hard job. And is it harder than being an csm. South or anybody do you know how much extra it will pay. Pay is an big issue with me. The CSM job pays $1 extra per hour so the trim manager should be more. The other managers said yes it does pays more. but the last two trim managers said they only got a dollar. Last year trim manager now a gsm was shock when she saw her check and saw only a dollar. She didn't know how much she was getting. She said ask for more. I am making $10.05, I am thinking of asking for $13 per hour. If not $13, maybe a $2 raise. But they better not give me a dollar. If they give me a dollar for a trim manager I am going to say no thanks and I am just going to take a csm job, which is easier. What do you think, should I take the job for a dollar. Please help. Thank you. I have the interview with the store manager next week. It was suppose to be today, but he was busy.

I don't know about the money, but I do know that it is a lot of work, especially for set up. You have to be extremely organized and detail oriented.

I love that department!
Why does Macy's charge so much for a Christmas Tree? Are they made of titanium cores?

I bought one of Macy's one thousand dollar trees, and I don't know why I bought it. At the time, I loved it, but now I want a new tree, and of course I can't buy a new one when I paid so much for this one.

Money,
You usually get $1 to do the arcade (or trim) "mgr" job...and contrary to the prior posts, I've never seen any one of them in my many yrs. promoted to anything...my opinion, you start out as a glorified stock person, opening 1000's of small boxes to get things ready, then you transition to a glorified sales person...there is literally little to no "managing" involved, since a gsm is responsible for the area (usually one of the hard goods gsms)...

Macy's has such beautiful trees. I would love have one, but they are more fond of them than I am, especially on a teachers budget. My tree came from Kmart, but grandfather bought it. I can't bare to part with it now that he is gone. He loved Christmas so much and my grandmother hates it so much, go figure!
I bought a small one at Kohl's about 2 years ago, it's silver, I really like it.

ok, MONEY, here is my two cents :
i also think it is a thankless job (what a shock, eh?) and here is why.....
at first it seems like such a cool job. ooh...manager of trim.
you set up the dept with the visual people and other helpers by following their "blueprint" for how they want everything. this is given to visual by the higher ups. it is done fairly early..sometime in september nowadays. you are very busy getting that all done and then..............................
you wait......................................and wait....................and wait ................for customers. in our store, there were no other associates scheduled for the dept till closer to thanksgiving, since you will really have no business till black friday.
and with the economy the way it is, people are really gonna hold off buying xmas stuff till it starts going on sale...really close to xmas. they are gonna shop at walmart, target, and all other discount stores before they plunk down big $$$ at america's department store.
by the end of the season, the dept is really trashed, then you go back to your old department. don't know about any extra money, tho a $1.00 increase sounds familiar.
no one that i can remember was promoted to any management cept one gal who after trim left the may co. dept store we were in, and a couple of years later started back as an assistant HR person, THEN was made a mgr....remember macy's -at least our store- was desperate at the time for managers as well.
i personally would never do it, and everyone who took the mgmt job said NEVER AGAIN. what else can i say?

I heard the christmas shop will be in middle of the home store this year where it will be more triffic, so they might give me somebody because they will be just like another cashier because they will ring up other stuff to. Usually the christmas shop is on the 6 floor all by itself.

money.....frank made some very good points.
it is up to you!! you should weigh all the positives and negatives of the job.
if you think you can handle the pressure and are up for the challenge, then i think you should go for it!!
