CHICAGO, July 1 (Reuters) -
Discounter Target Corp. (TGT) passed century-old department store chain Sears, Roebuck and Co. (S) for the fourth spot on this year's list of the largest U.S. retailers.
The biggest three U.S. retail chains held their positions on the list, released on Tuesday by the National Retail Federation's Stores magazine.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) , the world's largest company by revenues, widened the gap over its rivals with sales greater than its five biggest U.S. competitors combined.
Home improvement chain Home Depot Inc. (HD) held onto the No. 2 spot that it claimed last year, while grocery chain Kroger Co. (KR) remained at third.
Sears slipped to No. 5 after recording a slim 0.9 percent increase in revenues. Department stores have been struggling with falling mall traffic and increasing competition from discounters, which are expanding apparel offerings.
In another sign of trouble among department store chains, Gap Inc. (GPS) , the largest U.S. apparel chain, knocked May Department Stores (MAY) out of the top 20.
Costco Wholesale Corp. (COST) climbed two rungs to No. 6, passing Kmart Holding Corp. (KMRT) , which recently emerged from bankruptcy, and grocery chain Albertson's Inc. (ABS) .
Albertson's came in 7th, with Safeway Inc. (SWY) , J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (JCP) and Kmart rounding out the top 10.

Probably those of us asking him to come back. He testing the waters. IMO If you notice there isn't a personal comment.
Nofs, You personal comments are welcome, at least by some of us.( I don't speak for everyone, as well I shouldn't).

Nofsdad's comments ARE welcome,PERIOD. It is everyones choice to read them or not, as they choose. I find Nofs' post to be very informative and his comments and debates well thought and articulate. Usually thought provoking to say the least. Its like the TV. If you don't like the content, don't watch.

I for one, am glad to see Nofs is back. And as was stated in previous posts by others, everyone is welcome here as this is an open forum.
I don't know or care what changed Nof's mind, I'm just glad he's back.
Perhaps he's back because he still cares about what happens to us. Whatever the reason may be, it is Nof's business and not ours unless he prefers to make it ours.
I really don't think it is very hospitable to ask why he has decided to re-join us. I thought we all agreed to let by-gones be by-gones.
If you were honestly just asking because you're curious that's one thing, but if you were asking just to be snide; that is quite something else.
As to the subject posted: Yes, it is a sad day for Sears and I'm afraid it's only going to get worse. I would love to see some sign of a turn-a-round for Sears but I am not very hopeful of that at this point in time.
Until they can solve some big issues there will be no turn-a-round. And IMHO pushing low cost appliances is not the answer.
Sears needs to decide who thier customer base is and what they want. They also need to broaden thier customer base. Right now, a large part of our customers are the older generation. They resent computers and balk at having to use them whether it be at MPU or via the phones.
The number one complaint I get from customers is having to outsmart the computerized phone system just to get to a real live human being.
They need to update all the computerized phone systems to be more customer friendly and easier to use for the general public. The first option on all the phone systems needs to be, "You may press zero at any time during this call to reach a customer service representative".
Of course, then it would require that they actually have a real live knowledgeable human being to answer the call.

I'm not going to move this but I am going to re-post the article in "Front Page News." IMO this is the kind of thing that fits well there. At some point hopefully we'll be able to set up a regular news feed like the old site had.

The same story was posted on the Sears Intranet several days ago. I know some people do not believe it, but the company knows and acknowleges its performance. If any of you read the QandA they do not shy away from posting the most angry and embarrassing questions......

of course the company will report any legitimate information.... it is afterall a company held by the public, and as such is required to provide incidental knowledge on its financials.... this is a step that most major corporations take now, because the information is already available to those who analize, report on, and document such information.
It is not rocket science, it is just rolling the stone away from the entrance.......

It's only the 2nd or 3rd time Nofs was never going to post again. Relax, more times will come. You can say your goodbye's and express your sad feelings again in the future.

I for one have found Nofs info sites to be some of the most insite into what is going on.Nof definetly does the homework for all of us.USAI sure hope that I took your comment the wrong way, but I found it to be on the rude side. I totally agree with the comment of the customer base, I even wrote into ask Alan on the intranet never got a response to how we should really rally around our seniors. They are the most loyal based customer Sears has. The always buy the maintance, and I totally agree with how frustrated they are with our phone system on everything from service to delivery to calling the store. I do think that they should have an option key that says please press one for a human or something. IF they calll and not able to get through from frustration I will make the call for them. I also think Sears should have a senior citizen day like Tues or Wednesday, where they are given a ten percent off on that day. They need to reward not only their old employees but their old customers who have stuck with them thick and thin. I get some that come in and everything in their house from the siding to furnace to every appliance they have ever owned. THey like to tell you this was my first credit card. I only buy Kenmore. THe older woman were the strongest customer in cosmetics too and very upset by the cosmetics being gone.

I reread the posts on this thread - several people posted replies to Nofs injected news report - I did not mention anyone's name - I pointed no finger - I posted an observation - why are you responding with a sarcastic retort specifically directed at me?
