MicroSoft announced they will no longer offer stock options to their employees but will offer some other name for it and will list them as expenses - how many years do you think it will take Sears to decide to expense their options?

microsoft will also offer dividends for the first time to the tune of 10 billion dollars of their 50 billion dollars in CASH that they just have floating around. THERE is a company that knows how to run itself. This will spur other companies to increase their dividends for fear of losing investors to microsoft.

If Sears had a monopoly like Microsoft then Sears would have $50 billion in extra cash as well.

Really Unhappy? I didn't know that Sears had over 90% of the retail business in the country at any point in their history, when was that exactly?

By the way Mrs DD, I know it wasn't the question, so I would appreciate it if you mentioned that to the person that turned it into the topic of discussion then instead of me. I was responding to a change in topic initiated by Unhappy.

Well, when did Sears have over 90% of the hardlines retail business in the country then? I'm still confused a bit. See, 90% is a big chunk of the pie, and since it has been well published that the highest market share we ever acheived in Home Appliances was in the mid-40s percentile, I was just really unsure when we had that 90% monopolistic market share. Could you enlighten us?

I know nothing about market share percentage - but I do remember when Sears was #1 - now we are #6

in recent years it was the mid-40's...not so many years ago when we were the only nationwide appliance store...and have you ever heard of a hyperbole? it was used to bring emphasis to the post. figure it out

When we were the only retail appliance chain store we did not have over 50% of the appliance sales. The appliance business was dominated by a zillion little mom and pop appliance shops. As recently as 17 years ago the NATM buying group had a larger market share of appliances than Sears did. The problem is, the NATM buying group was made up of hundreds of small retailers that banded together to make bulk purchases of appliances and electronics. It was started originally by Lechmere for those out there that remember that former retail chain store. In your area of the country Unhappy you might recall a few store names from the 80s that were major players in NATM: Lechmere, Newmark & Lewis (remember, Dick Lewis is watching? hehe), and Sound Playground.

Icki I agree we have sold ourselve we never learned who the customer was. We just kept selling ourself till we got swallowed. Sears is where they are because of bad management and hate to say it but the new one will get us swallowed/ You wait to see what happens to our 401k after he sells off the auto and the credit it will climb but jump fast. Take a look at what bad management is about go in Motorolas portfilo what happen to their stock when the bean counters were playing the sell off game of six sigma to make the whole board rich. You sound like you know what you are talking about then really get a clue to what is happening. IF he sells credit nothing will save this company nothing. He hates to admit his mistakes were huge Land's End was Huge Master Card was huge! Getting rid of half our product was huge learn how to sell first learn your customer instead of playing the Simon Says Game and worrying about the guy next store. Get a game plan. Yes in the beginning Sears was the retail Giant. Now we are just hanging on.

If you look, the topic did not change - it was just another interjection of opinion - it was not personal - or aimed at anyone - it was a simple statement of opinion

If it looks like an option, smells like an option and pays like an opton then it's an option, whatever the name assigned.
This is a smart move on MS's part, they have had their hands full with ligitation over the past few years. Many corporations are doing the same thing since being criticized for burying the actual COST of options in lines other than compensation expense.

If Sears had just stuck to retail and nothinge else and improved the retail, we would of been ok. Upper mgmt. got greedy. After all, for many years the targeted shopper was the woman in her 20's to30's. Now who do we target?
