With apologies to stillthere and any others who have been affected by this;
The attackers took advantage of an exploit in the phpBB forum software. Although I haven't bothered to confirm it, stillthere's experiences and WhatHappenedToS's testimony (combined with what I've learned from the phpBB community since we were defaced) suggest that there is a very good chance that our site may have been distributing a worm.
The defacing we experienced today appears, to me, to be a second, unrelated, attack.
Recommendations:
- If you do not have an anti-virus program installed and use Microsoft Internet Explorer please visit trendmicro.com and take advantage of their web-based virus scanner.
- If you do have an anti-virus program installed please take the time to update your virus definitions and do a thorough scan of your system.
Links to common update sites:
The AV vendors listed above may also offer a specific removal tool should you find yourself infected.
Users of Mozilla FireFox are unaffected.
Again, my apologies if you've been infected by something originating from this site. I have been wholly preoccupied with personal matters and have neglected my obligation to the community and thus I was completely unaware of the vulnerability in the software.
I'd be happy to offer technical assistance via this thread or via email should any of you find that your machine has been compromised.
