I have been dropping by to read the boards for the past few weeks to see what everyone has to say, or complain about when on the subject of employment at Lowes. I am contemplating taking a position in appliances at a new location. The soon to be SM circled Appliances when we spoke, and said it was where he started, and it is a "good position". I have 20 plus years working claims, also 9 plus years working for a retailer, different industry, in loss control and claims capacity, so dealing with unreasonable, angry and demanding customers is something I am used to. Stress..long hours... I cannot believe that it can be higher in retail than insurance claims handling. I deal regularly with a families burned out of their homes, or many individuals who just have their new autos totaled by our Policyholders, and they are thousands of dollars upside down on their auto loans. I do not think the hours, stress, and physical demands will be issues for me. I am confused about the pay scale, the spiffs, incentives and commissions.....a Specialist is hourly or salary? Does everyone start out as an Associate? I need to make an annual salary of about $50K when it all gets added up. The location should be very good, the demographics suggest very high volume. Anyone "in the know" out there who can give me some clear info on this? Thanks in advance for the help. Rolling Eyes

Specialists are salaried and 48 hours per week minimum. You usually will work 50-52 depending on time of year and the dept you are in. Remember this is mon-fri. work either. Its 11 hour days, nights and weekends. You need to get used to the hours because they are crazy.
Making 50k in appliances is possible in a metro market, but only if you are in appl or maybe cabinets. Thats after commissions, spiffs, bonus etc...
Another good website is www.breakroomnews.com. Try the message board there.

Thankyou for the response. If anyone else out there holds a position in appliances or cabinets, I'd love to hear from ya.

Silky6,
Specialist at Lowe's are as has already been posted Salaried with a 48hrs. per. week min. They're two states that Specialist are not on salary but hourly, thats Cal. & Alaska, the form of overtime Lowe's uses is not legal in those two states. The salary you say you need my be possible in your market, but not in mine. Go for the biggest salary you can get from the start, because the yearly rasies want be to much after that. You only get commission on Special Orders and some on Installs, depending on the margin on the sale. Spiffs come from appliances and they can add up rather quick, again depending on the market and how many are selling in your department. If you're hired as a Specialist thats what you'll be from day one, you don't have to work yourself up to the position.

d00d do not worry about appliance specialist base rate... worry about spiffs...

if it is a high market store u could be making more than asst. store managers...

1 neptune set in ohio == $80.00 extra... just from spiff...

so sale 10 of them a week and you are $$$$

Thanks for the continuing stream of info! I posted another topic today about spiffs being taken away. I heard it in the first interview from HR. Spiffs are a big concern! It has me worried. This is a new store, not open yet. I suppose only the people with access to the demographic studies know this store's potential right now.
