Since Slek decided to lock the previous posts, I'd like to comment on the news of that. Living here in Texas, we've been hearing about the Dems and what they are up to. These people are an embarrASSment to THIS state and for all elected officials around the country. Instead of staying put and trying to work out the problem, these people create more problems by going to another state. This is not the first its happened. This happened in early June when 50+ went to Ardmore, OK. The way I look at it, these people are a bunch of idiots that need to be booted out the the state legislature and banned from seeking office again. They are not men if they do not fight for what they believe is wrong or right. Shame on them!!

It also happened in 1971 when current Republican speaker of the house, Tom Craddick and his "Dirty Thirty" disappeared from a legislative session.
| Quote: |
Craddick has no one to blame but himself. He helped write history when he was one of 30 members of the Texas House who disappeared during the 1971 legislative session.
Craddick and his "Dirty Thirty" colleagues were protesting the heavy-handed actions of then House Speaker Gus Mutscher and his cronies who were involved in the Sharpstown bribery-conspiracy scandal. |
So, I posit that both the Dem's and the Pub's are an embarASSment to your state.

Totally forgot about that. Thanks Slek. This whole thing is embarrassing. Sick. I just hope that our voters here will take notice and boot them out of office when the time comes.

It's the least I could do. ;)
The walk-out, while embarassing, is just another congressional "privilege". IMO it's no more annoying than a filibuster.

At least with a filibuster, they are still at the capital and not running away from their duties!

I guess I look at these guys differently! Both this years democrats and the republicans back in '71 showed a tremendous desire to give their constituents what they voted for, IMHO!
I look at it as "their duty" to the voters who placed their trust in them. Just another avenue of legislative power to me! I wouldn't be embarassed about them but rather proud these Texans are willing to go that extra mile (or 1000 miles)
for their cause!
It's always bigger and better in Texas!
Hook em' Horns!

Its funny really... how you can tell how a newspaper chooses sides by using words like, "FLED!"
I don't live in Texas, but I did hear one of the women that "fled" talking on the radio this morning, and basically, she said they made a descision to leave because the Lt. Govenor decided that because the republicans couldn't get a 2/3 majority vote on an issue of redistricting, that they were going to just go with a regular vote... which they would coincidently just have enough for without democratic backing.
I think her quote on the radio was, "If you play by the rules, and they don't win the game, then they change the rules!"
Essentially they were buying time... they certainly did this intentionally to stall-- and not to "flee thier jobs!" as some people are making it seem. They are very aware of the problem, and once people get past the "democrats are fleeing!" crap, people might become interested in the actual issue.
That has always been a problem... people get caught up in the sensationalism of media and no one bothers to look at the laws that are being passed unless they make it to the cover of TIME or People.
And I am not a dem... and it sucks that I even have to disclaim that here.
