Is it legal in Canada for an employer to mandate a bag check? I recently noticed a posting on the bulletin board notifying employees that anyone who enters or leaves the store with a bag will be asked to submit it to a search by a manager or loss provention.
I understand their right to protect their resources, but I'm not ok with them going through my personal belongings.
Just wondering if anyone has run in to this at their workplace, and whether or not it's actually legal...

The only time we had to have a bag check was if we bought something... LP had to check it out with proof on the receipt it was actually paid for...... They don't do it anymore

Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act
A good summary here: Employee Privacy in Alberta
Basically, you have to consent and the employer must demonstrate an overriding business need to search its employees, that the searches themselves are reasonable, and searching employees is the least intrusive method available to obtain the desired business objective.
On the face of it, I'd say no, it's an intimidation tactic but I don't believe an instance of employee searches has ever been challenged thus there's no case law to consult.

Random bag checks should be used to keep all the "honest" staff, on their toes....

I disagree.
I think a level of mutual respect, proper incentives and a decent pay scale would keep most people honest. Subjecting innocent people to having their personal belongings rifled through only causes a wider gap in trust between employees and management.

i think its ok for an employer to do so because a lot of shrinkage is caused by interior actions...where ever ive worked it has always been done, and where i am now its absolutely mandatory - even if ur just stepping out for a smoke, you have to be walked out by a manager.
