Ryan, Ex-Illinois Governor, Convicted of Corruption (Update1) and Abramoff wasn't even around for this one.
Had to be real careful not to pull this from any of the "liberal" news media outlets, all of which are reporting the story. Hopefully, nobody will accuse Bloomberg's of having a liberal agenda and we can just digest the facts in the case although from what we've seen lately their mere mention that Ryan is a Republican may be enough to qualify them for America Hater status, or maybe just Illinois Hater in this case.
| Quote: |
Former Illinois Governor George Ryan, who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for commuting the state's death sentences, was convicted today of charges that he took cash, gifts and trips in exchange for state contracts.
Ryan, 72, was found guilty on all 18 charges against him by a federal court jury in Chicago. Larry Warner, 67, a lobbyist and friend of Ryan, was convicted in the same trial on 12 charges.
Ryan, a Republican from Kankakee, Illinois, was the highest- ranking official targeted in an investigation that resulted in charges against 79 state workers and lobbyists, and convictions of 73. Two defendants are fugitives, and one case is pending. |
Now if the same federal prosecutors will just show the same zeal and diligence in going after federal elected officials and appointees as they did these state officials, we might finally start seeing some of that mess in Washington cleaned up. The Abramoff thing alone has enough going on for a solid year or more of trials.

Are there any honest politicians?
This is a story I've been following for a while.
Ex-Governor Siegelman is going to trial for "widespread racketeering conspiracy" that includes allegations he took a bribe from former hospital executive Richard Scrushy for a key state appointment. Yet, he is still running for Governor of Alabama, again. Such arrogance just amazes me.
Jury Selection for Siegelman Trial
| Quote: |
Jury selection gets underway Wednesday in Montgomery Federal Court for the government's corruption trial against former Gov. Don Siegelman, former Healthsouth CEO Richard Scrushy and two former members of Siegelman's cabinet.
The trial is scheduled to begin May 1 in Montgomery.
A federal grand jury indicted Siegelman, Scrushy and former Siegelman cabinet members Paul Hamrick and Mack Roberts last October.
All four pleaded not guilty.
Jury selection comes in the closing weeks of Siegelman's race for the Democratic nomination for governor on June 6.

I know Siegelman is a democrat. But a crook is a crook. Atleast I don't go around defending a crooked democrat just because of a political party.... like some people do.

Sure. They're the ones who don't last long or never riase high enough to be noticed.
In my opinion, Gray Davis, a Democrat was one of the worst governors the State of California ever had, even if so far there's nothing you can point to specifically that would land him in jail although I feel that he and his cronies having advanced information on which energy companies to invest in should surely qualify. He was strictly in it for the money and the deals he could get out of it.
It's not a matter of parties and ideologiesand neither party has a monopoly on greedy and/or crooked politicians. It's just that the Republicans are in the majority right now so there are simply more of them.
