Police probe Home Depot crash, fire

Police were still searching Monday for the motive of a man who allegedly drove his car through the front doors of a Home Depot early Sunday.

The store at Alma School Road and Chandler Boulevard remained closed early Monday, and police said workers hoped to have the store reopened by today.

"All indications are, for some reason, he wanted to cause damage to his ex-employer," said Sgt. Mark Franzen, a Chandler police spokesman. "Fortunately, it wasn't done at noon when hundreds or thousands of shoppers were inside."

No one was injured inside the store, but the crash started a small fire.

Ali Warrayat - a 24-year-old Gilbert man and an ex-employee of the store - was arrested on suspicion of arson and aggravated assault after police found him sitting on the ground outside the store.

Warrayat is employed at another Home Depot store and remained in custody Monday, police said.

Police say that at 6:10 a.m. Sunday, he drove his four-door, midsize car down the store's middle aisles, turned, went up the paint aisle and ended up at the paint mixing desk, according to police and fire officials. The store was scheduled to open at 7.

About a third of an aisle and the car went up in flames.

Last year on July 3rd, I co-worker of mine at OSH, drove his brand new truck(2months old) through the front door of our store at 11pm. We had no ideal, and were totally shocked that he would do this. Apparently he was upset because he didn't get a raise out of cycle like he asked for. He spent time with his friend Jack Daniels that evening, than drove over to the store just a few minutes away from his house. He went from a complete stop to almost 60-70 miles an hour across the parking lot from the 7 eleven. Can't believe he went exactly through the sliding door with about an inch to spare on each side of his truck. Completely obliterated one checkstand, went through outdoor furniture, and down the household cleaning aisle next to the paint counter almost making it to the back of the store. He was okay, and the store a complete mess. This happened two weeks before inventory, but we put the store back together and had a great inventory.
Glad to say that he now has over a year of sobriety and is a grateful member of AA. The funny thing is, he got a job at another hardware store in town.
