I imagine that the extra costs associated with shipping to the west coast is somewhat offset by the purchasing "alliances":

Quote:
Alliance International LLC

Alliance International LLC is the third-largest hardware and building materials partnership in North America. This alliance consolidates the purchasing power of three industry giants: Do It Best Corp., Home Hardware Stores Ltd. and RONA, which represents 5% of the retail home improvement market on the continent. The alliance distributes over 100,000 items to more than 5,400 retail members across North America. The mandate of the purchasing group is to gain additional savings, which can be passed on to member retailers.

RONA BMI Inc. Alliance

RONA sealed a strategic alliance with ITM Entreprises S.A., a European giant in food and hardware distribution. ITM supplies to 400 French Bricomarché stores, a chain of do-it-yourself stores that is associated with SPAR Handels AG of Germany, one of the biggest buyers in the hardware world. ITM's ownership consists of 2,200 members with over 3,000 sales outlets throughout Europe. The two groups share a business culture in which groups of independent merchants are formed to promote the interests of members. RONA's agreement with ITM includes a key strategic dimension which involves pooling of purchases for specific lines of hardware products.

I'd be curious to hear some vendor perspectives on negotiating purchases with rona et al.

Well, Revy built its name by using tregional suppliers. This allowed Revy to recognize local trends and demands. For instance cedar is huge on the west coast for fences, sheds and decks while out east ( and even the praries) other products are prefered (metal sheds, chainlink, etc).
We lost our "local" touch with these national gymics.

True dat.

Bah! It's the age of globalization! It won't be long before we're selling laminated bamboo 2*4's from China that have been milled in Bangladesh, packaged in Zimbabwe and imported by a French company utilizing Czech carriers. Mr. Green

I guess it's a good thing we have one of those "melting pot" cultures.

Some stuff we sell is brought in for low dollar but price tagged under a premium price. All the made in china stuff that looks really cheap... I cant belive people still buy it, its so obvious that it isnt going to last as long as you think it should, so why do people still buy it ?
