Maybe it's because I came out of a pretty independent occupational environment, but I find the petty rules and regs at Home Depot a bit much. I have been with the company about 6 months and am DH of lumber. They make the saw idiot-proof so that we are incapable of cutting anything larger than 4 x 6. I can't "cull" the large, long beams, even though most are trash, because the company won't let me use a hand-held electric saw. The safety officer and ASMs go apoplectic if I stray under one corner of a load on a forklift. You get harrangued if you're punch is off by a couple of minutes. Just too much petty bullshit.

I love working with the public and working with lumber. I think I do a good job and have excellent rapport with my associates. They just need to friggin' "chill out" a bit.

Pretty tacky replying to your own post, eh?

I went to my locker today to start my shift, and my band cutters and tape measure were gone. I went to the training room and a friend there said, "Oh, yeah. . .today they confiscated 'contraband' in lockers ( like we were hiding drugs or something ).

Now, for those that don't know, among their other delightful idiosyncracies H.D. has this: You can ONLY use the tools they tell you you can; e.g. their crappy "Home Depot" tape measures. No, you can't buy your own and use them and, no, you can't use any other type or other tools than they say.

Some time back I "wrote off" for store use a Stanley English /Metric tape measure because I get Eur. and Asian customers who come to me with metric measurements. I also wrote off band cutters. I always took good care; kept them in good shape and didn't lose them.

Anyway, though I didn't realize it initially, this was the proverbial last straw. I have done any dirty job they ever wanted me to do: Always stayed overtime for their ridiculous "walks" by the brass. But when they go in MY locker and take the tools of my trade, it's too much. I had punched in at 3:00. . .I punched out at 3:30.

A fellow D.H. looked at me in surprise as I approached the door with my lunch and all my gear: "Where are you going."

"Home"

IF they call me. . IF they let me have my tools back. . .I may return. If not, well. . .there are plenty of sane lumber yards around here.

Trust me I feel the pain. i worked in garden and had to open bags and cut pallets and boxes using the AWESOME orange box cutter that only a moron would cut himself with. Tape measurers. Oh the ones that go like 8', woohoo. That works when a customer wants to check out fencing and square yardage and find the area for blocks etc. Real Handy. Not to mention the customers who sit in your way like you dont exist as your trying to drive a fork through the garden outdoors with a tractor on it.

No, that's not the reason. I worked at a large retail chain prior to Home Depot, and I feel the same way. Maybe it would be different if all the silly rules made some sort of sense, but half of them just seem to be chosen by the dartboard method.

Too many boss's too much paperwork , training you dont even need.. to heck with it....... took my 20 plus years as a master electrician and walked...........
