Hey Slek,
Visiting another reeeeeeeeeally big message board, I discovered their way of controlling trolls.
(Please bare with me if you already know about this.. I mean, I know you eat and sleep this computer stuff... and you may already know about this - but I'm going to mention it anyway ..)
The mods apparently have a control (they call) 'ignore'. What it does is make it so that the troll is the only one who can see their own posts. Nobody else can see it.
And the troll doesn't know that no one else can see it either.
(Is this not a hoot!!) I know a few times something like this would have been sublime!!
So the troll can continue to post, not bothering anyone... but they don't know that. The troll feels like they're being ignored, and eventually leave.

I like that idea. I've seen user controlled ignore lists on other boards but never a global ignore. I'll look into it.

Even a user controlled ignore would be great. If someone was hell bent on spamming or starting crap slinging contests and everyone had him on ignore, it would accomplish pretty much the same thing wouldn't it?

With individual lists we'd have to deal with troll feeders messing up threads.
