In August I am moving to Logan, Utah and I need a job while going to college. I have been looking at home depot and lowes because of how much they pay. I want to work PT about 20-30 hrs. a week. I have worked at Big O Tires and at a Log Railing Shop. I really haven't worked retail. Let me know about what place I should work at, what jobs I should try for, when I should apply, how much I should ask to get paid, and any other information that would help me. Oh yea is it possible to not work sundays?

If you want flexibility of work hours and a human environment, I would not suggest working for a corporation the size of H.D. or Lowes. I would look for a small local chain or, if there are any still out there, a mom and pop place.

I agree with Nimbus...HD and Lowes will chew you up and spit you out. As for "flexibility" you are at the whim of HD/Lowes...including hours. You just work your schedule (and come in whenever the bosses call--which will be a LOT!) and you're okay.

If not, they'll just give you 5-10 hrs / week and get somebody who WILL bend to their whims.

Simple.

Remember the mantra of Lowes:

"You are here to replace the people who got fired, and one day we'll be replacing YOU."

That was day ONE at Lowes for me. Note that I didn't even finish that day after they said that!

I am also looking to join HD or LOW. I have sold cleaning supplies for 30 years. Can someone tell me what department cleaning supplies fall under?

Most of the time you'll find all the cleaning stuff in Paint.. but, every now and then, the older design stores will have cleaning supplies over in the seasonal area. How that makes sense, is beyond me.

the new stores have cleaning supplies between electrical and plumbing...My store just went through a remerch and they put it right in the electrical department right between lighting and rough electrical. It's like the right half of aisle 10. I'm the department manager of the electrical department and was before the remerch as well... No one agrees that this was a smart decision. If I were to have my way, cleaning supplies would have been in aisle 1 and lightbulbs should have been in electrical where they should be.. Oh well

I have 32 years outside sales experience selling cleaning supplies and equipment. Therefore, can anyone tell me if HD would be interested in hiring me as a cleaning supply sales associate or would I have to learn another department in addition to the cleaning supplies?

Uhm, Yea. You'll end up learning another area. I don't think that the cleaning aisle is a department all to itself in any store.. least of which any that I've ever been in. As a former Lowe's employee, I can tell you its the same boat over there too. My prior post said that the cleaning supplies were in paint, or over near the seasonal area... so , either of those departments would be where someone of your experience would go. Now, as Krox said, some of the remerch'd stores have their cleaning materials in or near electrical. Its very similiar in my store, but they used the aisle that breaks apart Seasonal and Rough Electrical, and they both take care of the cleaning and maintanance of that aisle. I've seen them in paint, which would be optimal, since most of the cleaning chemicals have similiar properties as some of the stuff in paint.. but I'm no merchandiser.

So, in short... Yea. You'll have to learn a new area. Hope that you're years of expertise can help you to learn quickly, and adapt easily in a new environment. You may be an expert on how to clean a carpet, but I can promise that you'll need to know how to fix a toilet with a week of being employed at HD.
