SAS software helps Hudson's Bay match goods to tastes

BUSINESS REPORTER
Hudson's Bay Co. says it has signed a contract with software provider SAS Canada that will help it customize merchandise in each store to match local demand.
The companies jointly announced the deal yesterday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The country's largest department store retailer said the software would help it track demand, cut costs and boost sales.
An HBC store in Victoria might carry a different assortment from one in Fort McMurray, for example, HBC said. The software should help boost profits by ensuring items that are selling poorly are discounted or moved to a store where they're in demand, said Steve Richardson, HBC's chief financial officer.
"A lot of this was an art previously," Richardson said. "We had certain tools in place. We believe this is going to balance art with science."
SAS Canada said Hudson's Bay is the first retailer in Canada to employ this software.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which competes aggressively with HBC's Zellers stores, has long been the industry leader in tracking purchases, said Lori Schaffer, vice-president of global retail for Toronto-based SAS Canada. |
Quite some time ago I had posted some of Zwicker's ideas for reinventing HBC in the Sear forum. It seems that this bankruptcy takeover might just be meant to become a retailer, not a REIT like some we know....
Just imagine, stocking the shelves according to customers' wishes? Stocking what actually sells in YOUR area?
Merchandising reinvented.
