Exactly how much information should a retail job applicant have to give? How many references do you really need?Should stuff like mother's maiden name be asked?Does your credit rating really matter? Are those tests really worth anything? Then why the turn-over in retail?

It used to be you didn't even have to give your SS# til hired but now with stuff like ILLEGAL immigration and use of credit rating your really not even giving this personal information to your employer but a 'prospective' employer.

To top it off, your social security number was never supposed to be used for/as identification but now US society in general treats your social security number like a scientist uses an electronic tag for animals on the Discovery channel.

I'd say just honesty in the background check (employement and criminal) should be all that is required for a retail job.But all of these tests, references, credit checks shouldn't be on the application.

And if you want an employee to have car just request it up front-please don't try an disquise the request in the "do you have a car or your own transportation question"-if I'm late or not available because of public transportation I'm late or not available period.

I guess if these retailers were more up front on those application they'd probably have to raise the pay:uh-oh-can't do that. Naughty!
