I sell shoes. The pay has been extremely good thus far, but it's starting to worry me that there's so many sales people being hired. Even the very best salesperson cannot offset the fact that it's a numbers game first and foremost.
Management tells us that having a staff this full is GOOD for us and they're doing it too help us, not hurt us. We'll see if that's true if/when my paycheck goes down. They also say that we need to sell 5x as much to 1 person instead of selling 1 thing to 5 people. Easier said than done. Sometimes the people you're selling to can't even afford what they're buying, and extending credit to them is rough in this economy.
I don't get why they don't just hire some quality salespeople with great customer service skills and fill out the rest of the man hours with part-timers here and there and cash wrappers. If I end taking a huge cut in pay, I'm going to leave. Replacing me is going to be TOUGH. Sure, they can find anyone to fill the position, but can they sell like I can? I know the inventory and I have a strong work ethic and great customer service skills.
The thing I worry about though is am I going to find this everywhere I go? I have a few options in working elsewhere, but will it be more of the same? Worries me.
