This last week I interviewed for a management position at Steve & Barry's University Sportswear. It sounds good, but the guy said there is a 52 hour minimum work week...ouch. Is that normal for a retail management position? It's good money ($35K to start) but I'd like to have a life outside work...not to mention that 10-11 hour days are gonna suck if the job is boring (and clothes are not anywhere near the top of my list of interests). Any input?

Retail can be a great career... It has been for me. The hours with some companies can be quite long, others not. The real decision to make is, do you really like the retail business? Retail has done so many good things for me, including giving me financial freedom. Blazing successes generally do NOT happen overnight however. If you are the type who likes a quick "bank or bust" I would recommend trying out the securities/stock business. Most people who get into this quickly get out, but those who have a talent for it can have a very lucrative position quickly.
One drawback to most retail companies is this: they do not polish the raw individual, and they are not the best teachers of business literacy. I learned very little inside retail, about business... Almost everything I know about business came from outside the industry... Another thing about retail... to succeed, you must be willing to reclocate to advance your career... if this is not a viable option, retail probably is not for you.
Hopefully, I have shed more light than confusion, and I wish you the very best.... and remember, you can always change jobs, you can always change industries, but we take ourselves with us wherever we go. I think you'll do fine, regardless of what you choose.

Do I like retail, I don't really know. I like warehousing and shipping & receiving stuff more than I like retail itself, but I can't seem to find much in that area. I'm mostly just looking for a job because I don't know what I want to do, and I was thinking retail might be the easiest way to get some management experience and move on to a more interesting field.
I found out today that Radio Shack has a management training program of sorts and it pays by the hour So I am looking into that now.
