Time to start poring through the local media sites again, looks like. We may be in that "one store at a time, keep it hidden from the national media" mode again.

Greeley will have to find another use for a vacated Kmart building for the second time.

Kmart will close its Greeley location, 2400 29th St., on Sept. 28, a store spokeswoman said Thursday.

The store’s employees were told about the closure on Wednesday. Of the store’s nearly 180 employees, those who are eligible will be offered a severance package and others will be encouraged to apply for positions at nearby Kmarts and Sears stores, said company spokeswoman Kim Freely.

“The store is being closed for business reasons,” she said. Freely wouldn’t elaborate about what those reasons were. The Greeley closure is the only currently planned closure of a Kmart in Colorado, Freely said.

The closure comes shortly after retailer Dillard’s closed its Greeley store in May.

“It’s a negative trend,” Greeley City Manager Roy Otto said. “It’s not good news for the community to lose another retailer.”

Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based Sears Holdings Corp., is the parent company of Kmart and Sears. Otto said the close proximity of the two stores in Greeley likely played a role in the company’s decision to close the Greeley Kmart. Sears, which will remain open, is in the Greeley Mall.

4 Closures?
LT

Defiance's Kmart to close this fall (Ohio)

Quote:
After about 15 years in town, Defiance's Kmart Super Centers is scheduled to close this fall.
Kimberly Freely, spokesman for Kmart, said this morning that associates at the store were notified Wednesday of the store closure, which is tentatively slated Sept. 28 for the public. Kmart won't be vacating the store until Oct. 15, she added.

"The store is being closed for business reasons," Freely said, though she did not indicate anything specific. "We close stores for a variety of reasons."

Approximately 120 full-time and part-time employees at the Defiance store, located at 190 Stadium Drive, are affected by the closure.

"Severance is being offered to associates who qualify," Freely said. Positions at other Sears (which merged with Kmart in 2004) and Kmart stores will be offered to the other employees.
Freely said closure of the Kmart store will not affect the Sears department store located across the street at Northtowne Mall.

Liquidation sales will be the next step as the store prepares to close.

Kmart also said it is closing three other stores in Michigan, Nevada and Colorado.

Talk about flying under the radar. They release this info during the holiday weekend while no one in the press or wall street is paying attention. ~GoodFella

No more blue light specials, Ionia Kmart to close (MI)

Quote:
The Ionia Kmart store will be closing Sept. 28, ending a long run of business in the area.

“It is closing for business reasons,” Kim Freely, spokesperson for Kmart's parent company Sears Holdings Corp., said.

Freely said the company will begin liquidation sales at the store on July 13.

There are currently 80 people employed at the Ionia Kmart location.

Greeley is kind of a dump. The store was probably being robbed blind by thieves who "shop" in Greeley and sell the merchandise at the large flea market down the road near Denver. Didn't we hear in the last six months KM cut LP to save money? It would've been a costly mistake in Greeley

Also the Greeley economy is heavily dependent on illegal workers, and they have been under the gun for the past couple of years. A lot of new retail has opened West of the city and it has been drawing some traffic.

All in all a pretty typical K-mart/Sears story. The store was old, uncompetitive, poorly located, didn't keep up with a changing environment.

As pointed out 'for business reasons' and 4th of July holiday weekend about sums it up

One of the things that has puzzled about Kmart for years at this point is that traditionally, going back decades Kmart has had a lower income customer who probably started going to Kmart because they HAD lower prices. But they want to creep everything up into another income bracket thus alienating their already erroding customer base.

From allhands description 20 years ago this would've been a good area and still might be a worth while store if Kmart stayed with a lower pricing strategy.
