Pentagon Programs Still Cost Too Much, Too Slow

http://www.dodbuzz.com/2008/07/07/pentagon-programs-still-cost-too-much-too-slow/

Quote:
Ultimately, the problem gets dumped in Congress’ lap. Lawmakers are then faced with the difficult choice: “pull funds from other federal programs to support DOD’s acquisitions or accept less warfighting capability than promised.”

Quote:
This over-promise, under-deliver culture turns program managers into less than straightforward product marketers.

Ya think?! But, then again... why not? Everybody else is doing it... especially Cheney.

Quote:
It’s caused by the failure to adequately fund the Pentagon’s programs, which promotes an “unhealthy competition among and within the services.” To get funding, program officials exaggerate what their weapons can do while providing overly rosy cost estimates, the auditors said.

A certain bullet proof vest comes to mind, eh?

Our soldiers are protecting themselves with inferior tools - quality based on lining somebody's pockets.

It's a damn shame that we have an administration that allows - and dare I say PROMOTES - stealling a buck even if it risks the life of a soldier.

Bush is an idiot for allowing Cheney to set up an arena of abuse. It's costing us the lives of our brave sons and daughters.

I can only trust that Bush and Cheney will ultimately find their way straight to hell.

I dare say Bush is an idiot based upon his inability to even chew a pretzel without it becoming a botched assassination attempt. I think the only thing he ever successfully accomplished was remembering the step process for breathing. I am honestly surprised how apathetic Americans were when they allowed him to have a second term given his botched attempt at Presidency during the first.

As far as the Department of Defense subject, they have more than a sufficient budget to accomplish everthing they need in servicing and protecting this country, the problem is money management as you said. Personally I believe that if they trimmed the budget a little, say in the form of one cancelled F22 Raptor, that 350 million necessary to make that one jet would be enough to fund most of the other departments in the country sufficiently, and the Pentagon might not even notice or even the flinch at the elimination of one modernized aircraft. I just think it's pathetic given the "over promise, under deliver" that they seem to work under, and then acting like a financial tumor to the cash flow of all other departments.

One of the things I've heard numerous times in regard to the F22 is, "Why do you need billions to have the "best" when what you already have will do the job required?".

I'm wondering how many other Pentagon projects this applies to?
