Or how to treat employees! And how to pay employees. And how to give benefits. And the type of merchandise to carry. And the type of advertising to do.

This article has a great deal to do with Steve and Barry's.

Interesting is the mention that store managers were instructed to reduce store safes from 9000 to 1400.

Another article I read said that Steve and Barry's white knight may be Sears Holdings or GAP, saying that both companies have expressed an interest.

Imagine GAP Superduper Centers...

I hope you dont mind a guy formerly from lowes on here.

SB is a very top heavy mangement company. LP was salaried including paying ot for a 50 hour work week. They also invested heavly in track and other cameras. Im not suprised they did not go bankrupt faster as they were buying/leasing up properites at astonishing rate.

I live near a Steve and Barry's which used to be a Boscov's (regional department store) and anytime it rains the store leaks bad.

Speaking of boscov's, I have a freind who works there who told me that they maybe closing some of their stores so i wouldnt be suprised to see Macy's lose some competition my way.

According to wikipedia..... (Remember you can't always depend on what it says)

Boscov's is an American department store founded by Solomon Boscov in 1911. The first store was in Reading, Pennsylvania, and today 50 additional stores are spread throughout the Mid-Atlantic states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Delaware, and Virginia.

The site goes on to say that Boscovs primary competition is JC Penney, Macy's, Belk, or Bon Ton.

Im from Pa (Philly area and home to the orginal Steve And Barrys).

Boscov's is a midlantic regional department store chain. They have stores in PA (hqs is in Reading PA),NJ,NY,DE,MD and 1 store in VA (Danville).

Its pretty amusing the macy's near me which is a former Strawbridges, is always threating to close. I know the mall that it is located in has made plans to demolish it and turn it into a large food court.

Hey South,

Have you been to Hickory Hollow lately? Dillard's is closing there on August 2, Steve & Barry's is unknown, and Linen's and Things is closing soon.

I wonder if that Macy's is next? Macy's made HUGE improvements at the 2 other Hecht's I frequented, and not that one. What do you think?

I think the smell is from all those particle board fixtures in the stores.

Sad shame, and to think Steve and Barrry's is the only decent thing in Manhattan Mall these days until JC Penney finally enters. Guess if they really want to make it workable again, they would have to bring back Gimbels.

It was in the NY Post that boscov's has not received new merchandise and did not recieve a line of credit.

I wonder what is coming for the little guy as you know the CEO is not going to give up the millions they make.

Gimbles would be a wonderful addition, but I don't see that happening. I guess the odds are the same that Lundgren would get hit by an asteroid.

Steve and Barry's stores always have this dull odor. I guess if you work around it, you wouldn't notice it. In Nashville it is really obvious and I can't stand it, but my local store it isn't so bad. Shame to, its less than a year old.

Hickory Hollow was a major player in the mall market of Nashville till the middle 90's when the affluent shoppers began to leave for Cool Springs and Green Hills. After they fled the area became attractive to less desirable people. It is now gang ridden and things are just getting worse. People don't feel safe.

That was like the mall I used to work in. People would park next to the store they were going to and run in and run out. Kids under 18 were banned on weekends after 6 unless accompanied by a parent. The local movie theatre closed after a gang fight in the parking lot. Penney's left the mall, and we hear Dillard's and Sears will be next. Macy's will be the only anchor left. They are trying to turn that one into an urban store. It is all very sad.

Steve and Barry's has agreed to be sold!

South - I have a feeling that if Sears and Dillard's both pull out then Macy's will follow shortly. Especially in a mall that is declining.

Rumor has it Macy's (which has been snooping around for a while) has bought land in a new lifestyle center under construction near my house. The last time Macy's operated in the town next to me was 1992 or 1996 - they either closed when Macy's went bankrupt or when Federated began consolidating. It was a clearance center for Macy's Atlanta.
