My husband was hired in July to open a new store in our town. Promises of advancement and that retire rich crap is a joke. We were informed last week he is no lnoger able to advance with the company because he is a specialist. He has to move down to an hourly employee in order to advance with the company. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Mad as hell in KY

What direction does your husband want to advance? All he needs to do is watch the job posting board in the back. He just needs to apply for any open position. If he does a great job as a specialist, the powers that be will be hesitant to move him, as really good specialist are more valuable than ANYTHING. But, if he really wants to move up, he just needs to keep applying and make sure they know he is serious. There is no policy that says he has to step down. Have him read one of the job postings, it will have all of the minimum requirements to be considered for a job

He happens to be a Plumbing specialist and he is also a licensed plumber. Everyone loves him and he has applied for other positions. They told all of the specialists in their meeting that they can no loger be promoted. They would have to step down to an hourly position. As it is we are having a terrible time with the pay and the joke of the commissions. We live in a town of only 32000 people and the sos is terrible. He has never had a commission over $20.00.

madwife,
I haven't heard of any such policy, it sounds like something your husbands Manager cooked up , for what reason I don't know. I'm a Specialist and can apply to move up if I want, we have a Specialist moving up to Department Manager in a few weeks, so what you're hearing is not a company policy. Tell your husband to call the Home office and ask if it's true. Things like this has happened several times at my store, but one phone call tells the real story.

yeah ive have heard the same thing . its not that it is policy now they say but will be in the next fiscal year or its coming to that so if you want to be mgmt we need to talk. but seriously who wants the freakin headaches anyway as a specialist aka the one who really runs the dept and surrounding depts. even if i went to a dept mgr position i would have to take a pay cut to supposed ly move up. they are not going to compensate the move for the spiffs or commission lost in the move
